At the age of 5 years, I found my singing voice as I learned 'The Moon Behind The Hill' from the centre-fold of 'Ireland's Own' in my Gran's kitchen.
Oh boy!!! did that settle the paternity? twinkling in some eyes!!!!...My father and family had well oiled voices.
Then throughout my life I learned every song ever written, have many favourates and some memorable (like my 1st.) including others which landmarked my career.
I can honestly say there are not many Irish songs that I dont like. What is your favourate.......or most memorable?. <img src="/images/graemlins/music.gif" alt="" />

Hello Molly,
There are so many, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I would be remiss if I didn't put forth "The Hills of Donegal" and "Mary from Dungloe." I know they're both old-fashioned, but that's where I come from and I could feel Dad holding back tears when we danced to them. He always had a special fondness for the latter because that was home to him and his mother was Mary, his sister, and then me, so I know it made him sentimental. He was a great dancer, but couldn't carry a tune in a bucket and I am the same, or was anyway. Can't dance anymore and I miss it to blazes.

Today I'd have to say "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen", just because my Dad always sang it. I'm not sure if it's truly an Irish song (i.e. a song written in Ireland, vs the US), but can we apply "favorite and memorable" broadly and include any song about anything Irish???

My fav song is My Heart Is In Ireland by the Wolftunes. My father use to sing it when I was growing up.

I'm hard to remember, but I'm impossible to forget.

One of my favourates too.
I'LL TAKE YOU HOME AGAIN KATHLEEN.
Written 1875 by Public School Teacher Thomas Westendorf in Plainfield Illinois for his wife Jeanie who was from New York.
Sung the very first time in Plainsfield Town Hall and the most popular song in America in 1876 along with 'My Grandfather's Clock'.

Oh yeah, my Uncle Billy used to sing that in the car when we were on long trips. We used to beg him to sing it and we'd all sing along with him. It's a tearjerker for me on two counts: the lyrics and the singer. Billy Griffin was a Corkman who was married to my grand-aunt Mae O'Shea, my maternal grandmother's sister who died before I was born. He was 66 when I was born. I was the first baby he ever held. That was only because he happened to pass my room in the middle of the night, finding me wet and cold. He reported that he did a passable job of changing his first diaper. (Others used to laugh when he said that, obviously knowing different.) Anyway, that was the start of a life-long love affair between Billy and me. He spoiled me in all the ways he could with great stories, long walks, rides in his little motor boat, trips to the beach. I credit him with my love for nature, horses, reading, and so much more. He was a truly wonderful person. He died of leukemia when I was 13, but he's still with me even now 40 years later. Sing me another round of "Kathleen," Jeri. <sniff, sniff>
He did something very funny. Years after his wife died, he married my mother's father's sister, so he was my grand-uncle times two. Keep it in the family.
Here's a new bit of gaelic for you.
Tog go bog e. (There should be accent marks over the o in tog and the last e.) It's pronounced toge, hard o; go like go-cart; bog sounds like bug, and the e sounds like a hard a. It translates into:
Take it easy.

Irish music makes hearts throb. I've been listening to some Planxty Irish folk music and paying attention to my emotions. I don't know if it's because of the memories involved or simple physiologic activity, but my heart is beating faster and there's a little ache there. I could cry, but I'm not sad. I feel more happy than anything. "The Gypsy Laddie" is a favorite from Planxty's work. They made a lot of lovely albums in the 70s.

"Galway Bay"
by Arthur Colahan

If you ever go across the sea to Ireland,
Then maybe at the closin' of your day
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Claddagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay.

Would love to go to Ireland someday and the Celtic music, beautiful. When I was in my twenties, I remember (and my son loved this fun song when he was little) The Unicorn Song. I don't remember who sings it, just the lyrics....still..."and the luckiest of them all was the unicorn" smile

Aha! The Irish Rovers. The Unicorn. I can hear it now! I think Whiskey on a Sunday was on the flip side. (I had the 45. For those too young, a 45 is not a gun; it's a record---ugh, a record was disk that was put on a record player and made music come out.) Anyway, side a had one song and side b had another, usually not expected to be so popular. Sometimes the side b songs proved more popular than the best-hope song on side a.

I love the Unicorn song by the Irish Rovers. Here is a really cute site for the lyrics and some animation that you might like:
