In my latest article, I talk about the increasing practice of big (rich!) design houses paying celebrities huge amounts of money to wear their jewelry to major public events like the Oscars:

How do you feel about this? Do you side with the celebs, in that you couldn't refuse a similar offer yourself - or do you think it undermines their integrity?

I think they can decide to make money how they want. Their bodies are their comodities. I'm sure they have a choice to choose from and still choose items they like. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I agree they should have the freedom to wear whatever they want. Also, consider the issue of expectations. Don't we all sort of expect big stars to wear clothing and jewelry supplied (one way or another) by designers or reps? I mean, I always assume that the trendiest-dressing stars receive a lot of their clothing for free. It makes me a little envious - - but it doesn't make me angry or disappointed. You know?

But as I talk about in this new article, some people apparently are really critical of these practices.

I guess I have bigger concerns over some aspects of capitalism in general - but this fashion stuff is no where near at the top of my concerns.

OT - Hey Moe, I loved your book review of the Kirstie Alley book. (You are a kick-butt book reviewer!) I think I'll order a copy, but I probably wouldn't have without reading your article. Nice work.

This is big business and this type of celebrity marketing creates the new trends we see all around us. The amounts of money generated by the companies that design the items is huge and I think it makes a bit of sense for celebrities to charge and be paid for this type of publicity for there items.

If they get the opportunity why not. After all it is really advertising for the designer.

I agree-- it is advertising and they are a being a spokesperson so I think it's all right, although a bit ridiculous:)

If you do love the products that it does not affect their integrity at all. Plus you have to consider that a lot of people buy the products they see their idols wear and use so a lot of money can be generated from a celebrity, how is that bad that they sometimes get a part of that money?

I think it's a fault of the public. They still expect glamour from their stars and for some of these people just starting out that's close to impossible.
But then again -- it brings to mind for me the old saying, "You couldn't PAY me to wear that!"
If the designers are going to do it, they should put their best efforts in the spotlight.
