Mel, Hi, I have taught paraplegics t the V.A. hospital as well as worked with many others who have some disabilities. Depending upon the degree of disability, you may have to make a lot of modifications, but it is very do able with efforts. I teach kung-fu, but there are many styles that will fit the bill. When working with the veterans, we had two goals; one was establish a better range of motion and circulation to improve health, and better enable them to care for themselves, thus raising self-esteem. The secound was real self-defense. Some scum bags were actually targeting disabled vets in this area, because they knew they got a check and would be easy game. We helped change that. For health we taught some qigong(chi kung), a tai chi like exercise based on isometric movement and breathwork. For self-defense we used chin'na, an aspect of kung-fu that utilizes pressure points and joint locks. We also utilized some jiujutsu techniques. We chose these arts because being disabled from waist down, the vets could not use striking methods from arts like karate or tae kwon do. Don't give up if you get a few disinterested teachers, there are many sincere ones out there. Discuss any limitations with the potential teacher and they can probably let you know if they can make their style work. If you have no luck or need assist locating a good group, you can contact me badbadbear2004.byregion.net and I will help you get contacts. Sifu Ike
