The BellaOnline Charity Site now has a place to hold discussions. Yay!

If you are reading this, you probably have some sort of opinion on charities. Tell us about your experiences. What groups do good work? What has been your biggest charitable challenge? Just how many of the Geaorge Arlington hoax emails have you gotten?

This space is ours to discuss whatever we like. Let's use it!

I think it is very important to do things for the community and charities especially this time of year. I look at it as a way to give some of my time away and spend it not thinking about myself or my life

So I try to volunteer a bit this time of year, and I give some money to one charity a year. Last year I gave some to Avon for Breast Cancer research, the year before to Whitman Walker for HIV/AIDs research.

This year I shopped at Sears because they try to support our military abroad. I actually posted about this on our site. They have a good military pay policy AND they are offering free shipping to APO/FPO addresses. So, in an effort to support our troops, I did a lot of shopping there.

What charities would you suggest looking into? I'm always trying to learn about more! Merry Xmas

Hi Stephanie:

Thank you for your recent forum post.

You are very generous to provide support to those organizations.

There are many charities in need of help. Since it is the day after Christmas, I would suggest recycling electronics such as cell phones, pda's, and computers to anyone who may have been fortunate enough to receive any of these items for gifts this year.

Since the winter months can be very cold in many states, I would suggest donating warm clothing such as hats, scarves, gloves and even blankets to your local shelter.

The best charitable match for you depends a lot on your interests and the time or funds that you have available. Check out http://www.volunteermatch.org for various volunteer opportunities.

Happy Holidays!

Great! Thanks for all the wonderful information. I'm sure there are a lot of things I could donate...

I'm going to buy some socks at Sears to ship to my friend who's stationed in Iraq. I'm sure he could use them!

I'll look into the good websites you gave me.

Hi! I just wanted to add something about giving back. I playbasketball and happen to know a few people that plays professionally. I would like to put something together for the homeless shelters in my town, like an all-star game, where the group would recieve 100% of the profits. My niche right now is to help non goverment funded charites, because they rely on public donations. I have a few organizations i'm meeting with, i'll let you know how that goes.If your interested or know of a group that relies on public donations check out www.themalloftheworld.com/fundraiser/?189214

Thanks

I work for a company in Lakewood, Colorado called Video Professor. We make computer software tutorials for most of the major software titles.

John W. Scherer, CEO of Video Professor has donated a computer lab along with unlimited online access of our complete 35 title software learning tutorials to Walter Reed Hospital as part of the Wounded Warrior Project. Mr. Scherer wanted to do his part in helping recovering soldiers be prepared when they re-enter the work force.
