Hi Jeanne,

I just saw your article about Zimbabwe. You probably know how complex is the current economical situation of Zimbabwe. It is because Mugabe force all white farmers to leave the country and they farms are taken by violence - by poor black people who have no experience how to run them and much more...

Jeanne,

thank you. Unfortunately mass media do not talk to much about Africa. Some topics are much more favored than the others - about foreign affairs.

I used to know a guy who moved to live in Poland - because the life in ZImbabwe was just impossible for him!

Unfortunately every revolution has its victims and this one on Zimbabwe - to deprave good educated white farmers - their farms - just because they are richer and white was not a smart thing to do.

What is happening in Zimbabwe is too bad - at least for the short-run. However, when you look at some of the history of Zimbabwe - it starts to make sense.

In the 1940's & 50's the local people were forced off their property so the rich, white people (Englishmen) could have the biggest and best farms. They could also afford to buy things like fertilizer and equipment to work their farms.

In 1980, Zimbabwe broke away from Britain and apartheid-like racist laws began to creep in with the white farmers taking even more land for themselves.

What we have been seeing for the past few years now is the Zimbabweans saying "We not going to take this anymore. Get out!" They are taking back what was their land to begin with.

Through all of this upheaval and violence (white farmers have been killed for their farms) you will see the economy of Zimbabwe decline. Hopefully, as this all resolves itself we will see a strong fair government rise up and help its people take care of their land.

This is a fairly simplistic view of what's going on - there's more to it, but that should give you a good idea. It's sort of on the same idea of when the Nazis took a lot of Jewish (and other) property for themselves. Only now is some of that getting sorted out.
