A client of mine would like me to make a banner for her website in the shape of an oval, rather than the usual rectangle. Any tips on how to do that? I've never done any shapes!! I use PhotoShop 5.5
TIA!

Hi Jodi,

I don't use PS, but in PSP they have preset shapes and/or selections with an ellipse you can use to make an oval..does PS have something like that you could use? I hope this helps, or that someone with PS will be able to help you. It's nice to "meet" you, though.. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )

Hi,

Photoshop has an ellipse selection tool similar to Paint Shop Pro. You might also want to experiment with the rounded rectangle. You can get an interesting banner with the rounded rectangle and you still have a lot of room on the banner for the text.

Believe it or not, I've got no clue how to use it! I'd love to try, but I'm clueless. What I ended up doing was just finding an oval shaped wingding and doing it like that.
Thanks!

Hi Soapmaking:

Just use the select tool to make an oval instead of a circle...the round one. Its on the top left of the long main set of tools to the left of the screen.

Put whatever you like in that, and make sure the background (layer) is the same as your client's page.

Hi Jodi,

You can make an oval with the Ellipse tool which is hidden under the Shape tool icon. However, like peonyista, I usually just use the elliptical marquee tool to make an ellipse selection and then fill it with whatever I want.

Basically it is the same for both tools. Just click on the ellipse selection tool or the Ellipse shape tool. Then click and drag your mouse in the spot you want your oval. You will see the moving dashes to indicate the oval selection or a black oval if you used the shape tool. Then use the bucket to fill the oval with whatever.

Diane
