I received this as an e-mail this morning. I enjoyed it,thought you all might too. I am amazed at the fragile nature of these tiny wonderful creatures. The e-mail read as follows:

This is the neatest thing I've seen in quite awhile! (I'm glad she put that toothpick there for perspective in that one shot. Imagine, that teeny nest, only 1.5 inches in diameter!) Hummingbird Hatchery This is truly amazing! Be sure to click on NEXT PAGE at the bottom of each page...there are four pages. Adults and children will find this very interesting. Enjoy!!! This lady found a hummingbird nest and got pictures all the way from the egg to leaving the nest. Took 24 days from birth to flight. Very neat and good pictures. Go to this web site

That is an amazing hummingbird pictorial display with great photos! Did you note that at the end it described the two cameras used to take the photos and also said that no computer was used to generate it....just WebTV.

Beautiful pictures. I'm happy that all the attention she paid to the nest didn't upset the hummingbirds.

I wonder why the other baby disappeared. Was it sick? Did a creature get to it? Did the other baby do a dastardly deed?

Lois, that was fantastic! I'm glad we could see them. If you look at the pictures before there was one, you'll see the one who made it with its beak sticking out just the same way it does when it is by itself. Interesting. Maybe the other bird just wasn't strong enough to hold up its little head.

I'm thinking the stronger of the two babies kicked the weaker one out. Or perhaps mama knew that one was weak and to ensure survival of her stronger one, SHE kicked it out. I really don't know it's just a guess. I do know that this does happen with some bird species, but not sure about hummingbirds.
