I picked up another foster dog Thursday afternoon. I originally went to pick up a couple of puppies to house until they went on a rescue run in a few days. But when I got there it was a madhouse with people leaving animals and people trying to fill out applications for animal adoptions. So since they had extra puppy runs available, but no big dog runs available, I ended up taking home an overweight 4 year old female named "Leach". Well, I'm changing her name to "Peach", because she's big and round and fuzzy and peach-colored. She seems pretty nice so far - well behaved and willing to please. But she's going on a diet and exercise program right away. She's too big to be as large as she is now. I'll let you know how she progresses.

Brandi, our other foster dog, surprised me today. We went for a walk in the woods and stopped at my favorite rock to sit on and look over the neighbor's farm. She was standing with her back to me and I noticed she was in heat - yikes. She's supposed to be spayed. So now I have to keep extra close watch on her for a couple of weeks. She'll have to be put in the 6 foot kennel at night and while we're gone and hopefully she'll be OK in the fenced in yard during the day while we're here. I hope there are no unneutered males running loose anywhere nearby.

My dh is off on a three day motorcycle trip, so Smiley and Dexter are enjoying spending time in the house with mommy while daddy's away. I have them trained so well. They know when to beg to come in and when not too. They've learned when dad's not home by dark, they can come in, and when he's here, don't go whining at the door. I'm afraid dear Oscar isn't quite ready for indoor living, so he's staying in the garage at night on Smiley's thick comfy bed.

I don't remember if you all remember me telling you about Smiley's mystery ailment. She had slowed down so much and always acted like she was sore or out of breath. Well, the vet put her on an arthritis medicine, and it seems to be doing Smiley some good. She walks in the woods with me and keeps up pretty well, sometimes even running ahead. Like tonight - I took four dogs for a walk (Brandi was the only one on a lead) and we came across four deer at different times. She actually chased after two of them quite briskly. Oscar was a good boy and stayed by my side. Dexter was long gone as soon as we hit the woods. Brandi was stuck pulling up the rear with me much to her dislike.

What a picture you paint. All of the dog ins and outs. It sounds like a circus. LOL Peach sounds like the perfect name for the new dog. It may even make her more desirable for adoption.

Many years ago I had a friend who raised sled-dogs. When one would come into heat that he didn't want to breed, he would buy rubber pants that used be for babies (back in the days of cloth diapers). Then cut a hole for the tail and wouldn't let the dog near others without her "pants" on. It was so funny to see, but he swore it worked.

I'm glad to hear the Smiley is feeling better too.

Brandi is getting spayed tomorrow (thank goodness!). Our shelter gets a free spay/neuter each week from several of the vets in our area. So Brandi was awarded this week's spay from the most reputable vet clinic in our area. I was getting very weary of watching out for that girl. She's very swollen and won't leave herself alone. So having to watch her fuss over herself is a chore in itself. Then watching her reaction to Oscar everytime he comes near her fence is another. She definitely wants that boy to be "the one", but he's not equipped anymore. She's not interested in Dexter who's also not equipped. She's also a bit of a handful these days too. She got out of her fence today - thank goodness she didn't take off. She went straight to Oscar. So she's had to spend all day in the kennel. I've also been worried about the rest of the local male canine population coming around. Luckily no one has yet. So tomorrow's surgery will be a relief to her and us.

Whew! I bet you will be able to relax more after the surgery. *****es in heat are a handful.

Brandi's surgery went very well. We were able to pick her up that same day. I had a meeting to attend that evening, so Brandi had to spend the evening at my mother's. She just layed around all evening and didn't even move. She had a harder time than any of the other dogs I've had spayed. She layed around most of the day yesterday, but by evening was starting to act like her old ornery self. I took her for a short walk and she seemed to enjoy that. I'll have to keep her dry and clean for 10 days, until her stitches are out. So no romping with the other dogs for a while.

Lois, Glad the surgery went well. It sounds like Brandi is sensitive to the drugs that knocked her out for the surgery. That happens sometimes.

I have to laugh at the ****es in my post. I had used the proper term for a "female dog" in that post. I guess Bella deamed it inappropriate.
