As some of you may know, I am a teacher, and this year I'm teaching 2nd grade. One of the other 2nd grade teachers is an animal lover (aka nut) like me. She runs a collie rescue at her home and houses up to 20 dogs at a time. Well, we are doing an animal project this year. Some of the things we'll be doing are: posting an informative animal fact each day on the morning announcements, featuring a specific animal on a bulletin board in the hallway each month, visiting the humane society, a local farm, and a state park, and of course, including animals in as many lessons as possible. For our read aloud storytime after recess each day, I read an animal book (that way I squeeze in science, too-which I seldom have time for). We've learned about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds, and fish so far and are classifying animals into these groups. I am having a blast with this and just hope that these kids will grow up to respect species other than their own. So,Marian, I really think this web-site will be a great help to us.

Thanks, Lois! I'm glad to see that all my hard work is being put to good use, LOL. Don't miss the camouflage link, by the way. That site is really interesting and the picture they have of a chameleon is absolutely breathtaking!

Lois, I, too have started my year with an animal unit! We are doing the farm, with a focus on pigs, this time. As you may or may not know, I teach disabled kids (physically as well as intellectually) and although they are grades 1,2,3 age level, I am basically running an SK/grade 1 program. We have just booked a trip for Sept 30 to a farm (a new one, for me, though the class we're going with was there last year and said they are fabulous there!). Our own trip to this farm last year was cancelled due to bad weather so I've got my fingers crossed that we make it this year!!

I am up to my snout in pigs these days, lol, but if you want to email me, maybe we can share some program ideas and I also have some cool websites bookmarked that you might find useful.

Shelley, would love to share teacher stuff with you(as well as paper-craft stuff! I had recess duty this week and we're out on the field playground. The kids keep bringing me caterpillars and grasshoppers and I keep telling them to walk them over to the weeds where they'll be safe. And they do. It's so cute. I hope these are their first steps to caring for the critters of the world.
