Those of us from that *other place* have had this conversation before but I thought it might be fun to revisit it once again.

Have any of your animals -- pets or wild -- ever brought you or left you any, shall we say, surprises, or special *gifts*? How strange were they? Yesterday morning, I was checking my lovely hanging plant outside my front door to see if it needed watering and I found, half-embedded in the soil, what I thought was a chunk of that rather gross-looking foam stuff used in flower arranging. Upon closer examination, however, I realized it was a very mouldy piece of dinner roll!! The most disgusting part of it was, though, that it was PINK in colour!!! I wonder if that had anything to do with the fact that flowers in that pot are pink and maybe my watering had bled the colour onto the roll. EEEWWW!! Last year, I twice found half a dinner roll buried in my planters, at two separate times during the summer, presumably by squirrels. I don't often see the squirrels in the front, though. Very odd.

And this morning, I was checking that same plant in the front of the house and to my horror, my finger hit something hard again that was clearly NOT soil. With much trepidation, I peeked in, only to discover this time that it was a whole pinecone, buried almost completely!! eek

Maybe I should just provide them with a locker and they'll leave my plants alone!!!

I'm just wondering where these squirrels of yours are finding dinner rolls!!! Perhaps the condo board needs to put out a memo that says "please discard your dinner rolls properly."

Mango, my orange tabby, has been helping me out. The carpet guys didn't do a great sweep-up when they were done, and Mango keeps finding things they left behind. Every day when I get home from work, another little surprise waits for me. And she always puts it in the same spot, almost as if she, too, wants a clean house and knows I'll pick it up if she leaves it there.

I don't know if I've shared this one with you before...

Our dearly departed "Homer" was a wonderful Golden Lab. He was trained (well at least partially) as a bird dog. He was not allowed to "drop" anything he had retrieved. He had to let us take the "prize" out of his mouth.

Homer had a habit of taking one of the kids balled up dirty socks and carrying it around in his mouth. So many times I have put my hand in his mouth to take out a wet sock.

This one day Homer sat at the front "glass" door with his, "I have something for you." look on his face. I opened the door and put my hand in his mouth. I closed my fingers around a very wet "prize". As I got my grip on this prize, Homer opened his mouth and took a step back to let me have the "prize".

To my horror, the "prize" turned out to be the "head of a rabbit". Some hunter had killed a rabbit and cleaned it on our property. Dear old Homer had found the head and brought it to me. I couldn't scold him. He had done exactly as he was trained to do. I had to praise him. But you can be sure, I was not happy with the poor rabbit head I held in my hands.

Where do I begin?! Last fall our dogs discovered the entrails of a deer that had fallen victim to a hunter in the woods. For days I would walk up the steps to our front porch and find a different part of the deer in the grass. First it was a bladder, then a heart, then something else. Each day the DH would take these parts away, but the dogs would bring something else. The day the intestines arrived was just too much for me.

When I lived in an old farm house a few years ago, the back door had a place in the screen that the cats could slip through. Mama Cat would often bring in her kill. Once she brought in a live flying squirrel. She dropped it and it ran across the floor. She caught it and I picked her and the squirrel up and threw them out the back door. Then I chased her away from the squirrel and it got away.

Another time she brought in a dead one and left it for me. I picked it up by the tail to toss across the fence. When I flung it out of my hand the skin on the tail stripped loose and I was left holding it as the rest of the squirrel went over the fence. Talk about grossed out.

OMG!!! You are one brave woman!!! I feel like we are such city wimps, here, by comparison!!!

My 2 late great (but equally wimpy!!) cats, Buddy and Jessie, were not outdoor cats and as such, were not too familiar with other *wildlife*, shall we say. In fact, I often cursed them for not earning their keep because they wouldn't even kill the bugs that found their way into the house!! I have many -- TOO many! -- memories of seeing one or the other of them hunched in front of a creepy crawlie, and one paw would slowly reach out to touch it. As soon as it moved, the paw would be pulled back in faster than you could imagine eek . This little scenario would be repeated over and over until *I* noticed and finished off the job! Sheesh! Talk about not pulling yuor weight!!
