Several of us are hoping to get a book discussion started in the Work & Family Forum. Blind Spot by Stephanie Kane, was suggested by one of our forum members. It seems like a excellent choice.

Blind Spot is a first novel from author Stephanie Kane. It was published in 2000, is available in paperback and is a 300 page read . It has received 5 stars from Amazon based on 29 customer reviews. A portion of the Product Description on Amazon states: "Cold, hard evidence--a prosecutor's dream, a defense attorney's nightmare Criminal defense lawyer Jackie Flowers got what she wished for...a high-profile murder case. While defending entrepreneur Aaron Best in the grisly slaying of a millionaire's trophy wife,... Jackie turns FBI profiling upside down and uncovers a string of killings that could either free or hang her client. But Jackie has one big secret of her own--and it might make her the killer's next target." One of reviewer's called Blind Spot "a gripping psycho-legal thriller."

The suggested discussion start date is Wednesday January 12, that will give those who want to join the discussion a chance to buy the book and start reading it. Or those who have previously read to glance at it again. I love this kind of novel. I am interested in finding out how many forum members read Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb? And if there are enough of us to discuss her "In Death" series at a later date.

I look forward to chatting with you. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I'm looking forward to this book discussion! I did have a hard time finding this book and ended up ordering it through Amazon.com.

Vannie, I am certain that I have read J.D. Robb but I don't have a direct recollection of any one novel. Next time I'm at the library, I'll look at some of the titles and see if any jump out at me.

Meet you all back here on the 12th. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hi Vannie!

I've read one of J.D. Robb's novels--Purity in Death. In fact, it was the first one I released through Book Crossing. I didn't like her writing, and found it simplistic...as if she was trying too hard to make her protagonist--Eve Dallas--a toughie. The premise itself was cool: a female cop in a futuristic society, but I just didn't care about the characters or find them believable.

Hi Jean <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ,

I suspect that you would have remembered if you had enjoyed it -it's an odd series. That probably means Roberts did not click with you as her alter ego Robb.

Talk to you later

Hi Janet <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ,

You are right Eve Dallas is a toughie; but not so much, as you get to know her. For some reason I am reminded of the television series 'Cagney and Lacy' which I loved. I have read all of the 'In Death' novels in the order they were published and am a huge fan. While waiting for the Robb's next issue to be published in paperback, I have been reading Alexander McCall Smith's novels about another female detective, Mma Ramotswe.

I hope you will join us in reading Blind Spot.

So I just started Blind Spot. I've read the first 3 chapters (short ones, I'm only on page 17)and find the author alternately picking up and dropping three story lines--the date rape (just some fluff to get us started soon to be dropped, I'm sure), Lily, and the murder. It's a bit distracting for me, the jumping between subjects, and I hope she gets focused soon.

I'm always interested in a writer's style and so far I am finding Ms. Kane's to be rather over-done in descriptiveness (can you find mandarin in a box of Crayolas?). But this is her first book and maybe she will settle down as we go along. Another example, "Freeing her honey-colored mane from it's leopard-print scrunchie, she punched the rewind button....."

But, critiquing aside, we've now got a suspect! Let's get on with the clues, the false leads, the alternate suspects....I LOVE this kind of story!

Oh, by the way, what are Ragg socks? Can anyone educate me about AmJur? And what's a fluorite, how do you fasten it on, and what does it do? I'm going to learn some things from reading this book! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hi Jean,

It's interesting that you ask what AmJur is. It is a search system used by lawyers. It's used a lot to search for cases old cases, etc. Am Jur means American Jurisprudence. I work for lawyers <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

And, I have to apologize, that's the reason I have not had a chance to get started with Blind Spot. We have a *huge* court case going on now, and I have been swamped :-( I will be able to read some chapters and post this weekend.

On Kane's writing. It sounds as if she is mimicing (sp?) the style of 'the hard boiled cop' pulp fiction authors.

Jean,

That statement I made about Kane writing 'hard boiled cop' style. Well I take it back - her writing is totally different.

I looked Ragg socks up on the internet and found they are just thick ribbed socks, not a brand but a style. Have not checked out fluorite, but it appears to be the different colored mineral stones?? that people collect. I had to go over the "fastened on" sentence again and again. I finally understood that she meant "I looked at", her eyes fastened on the stone.

I too find Kane's writing very distracting. She pretty much continues throughout, but you get caught up in the story anyway. It seems that the little girl Lily is a real key to the story. Her adoptive parents seem incidental to the plot and I wonder why they would adopt a child they seem to have no time for. Maybe the Lily character was necessary but there was no other way to bring her in. Oh re: Amjur. I have read that part. I think if she had just said she "looked at the stack of old cases" it would have had more impact.

All of that said. I do find the premise of the story very interesting and will keep reading.

O.K. I am hooked. But truthfully I had to get into the rhythm of Kane's writing. I think she just loves the 'sounds' of words.

I like the heroine, attorney Julie Flowers, she's smart and talented. I particularly like Pilar Perez, Flowers' investigator. Not only is she an excellent investigator, she is the best friend who will tell you the truth even though you don't want to hear it. I would love to talk about Flowers client Alan Best, but don't want to leave spoiler's here.

Oh, Julie looks at fluorites to relax and center - I think sort of like watching fish in a tank? <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Just checking to see if my profile has been restored. Also I did finish Blind Spot. The ending was a shocker for me. I was totally surprised <img src="/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
