I am a big fan of the sandwich. I am always looking for new and unusual sandwich recipes. One that I love anytime of day is apple, almond butter, and a drizzle of honey, and a dash of cinnamon on seven grain bread. Oooh, it's a good one. Also, a tofu sandwich with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and lemon pepper seasoning, on whole grain bread, of course. Sound good? Well, it is! Also, if I make a cold cut sandwich, I must have hot peppers and lots of veggies (mushroom, bell pepper, sprout, anything goes!) in it. Anyone have strange or unusual sandwich favorites??

Just about my favorite sanwich! My husband thinks it's strange but it was a staple when I was growing up.

Some of my favs are:
Smoked Turkey on croissant with mayo, cranberry jelly, avocado, lettuce, tomato and swiss.

Roast beef with roasted red peppers, bleu cheese, red onion toasted (like a panini) on ciabatta then add lettuce and tomato.

One of my favorite sandwiches is tuna with apple chopped up in it.. ok.. so that's strange.. The kids and I love to make a roll up sandwich appetizer for snacking or family picnics etc.. We get Tomato-Basil flat outs.. they are a very thin bread in an oblong shape in wheat, italian, original and tomato basil.. they can be found in the deli at a Walmart superstore.. I don't know where else. Anyway.. we get paper thin deli roast beef and hot pepper cheese and make a spread from 1 box of cream cheese with 1/2 pkg dry ranch dressing mix.. combine the cream cheese with the mix and add a few Tbsp. of milk as desired for smoothness.. spread it on the flat-out and place the roast beef all the way across the flat out on 1/2 of it.. add a couple of slices of the hot pepper cheese and roll up. I usually refrigerate for a few hours and then cut into sections.. They love them.. not exactly sandwiches but sort of. Deborah

How about grilled cheese sandwiches made with cheese, slices of apple, and a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar?

There's also PB and crunchy dill pickles.

I agree with the hot peppers (jalepenos) on the club/deli sandwiches.

And if you are lucky enough to grow your own tomatoes, I love to use a thick slice of fresh tomato with extra-sharp cheddar.

Peanut-butter, mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish (pickles) on your standard favorite bread. I like cracked-wheat or oat-nut. Am I seeing a trend with this...ways to use the old standard--Peanut Butter?

Remember - somebody DID ask for unusual favorites.....

Favorite #1: This is comfort food for me!
Freshly made roasted peanut butter and Texas Pete Hot sauce on thick cut hommade white bread

Favorite #2: I make this for lunches and all-nighter work sessions!
Freshly made roasted peanut butter mixed with a spoon of Red Curry Paste, sprinkled with Toasted Coconut and chopped mixed dried fruit.

This will sound boring, but I love just a regular American cheese and mustard sandwich on whole wheat. I love 'em! Sometimes I will add hamburger dill pickles if we have any in the house. I am putting this in "unusual" because most people look at me like I'm from outer space when they hear how plain it is. LOL

An old favorite-

Bacon, avocado, red onion and lettuce on whole grain bread.
A little mayo tops it off.

Peanut butter, marshmallow creme, and banana, preferably on whole wheat.

Peanut butter and apple or pumpkin butter on whole wheat.

Sesame butter (tahini) and blackberry or raspberry jam.

One of my favorites when I was a kid was a "bread and butter sandwich"

I have two sandwiches I absolutely love. The first one is roasted turkey, extra avocado, and sprouts on croissant. The second one is great right after Thanksgiving, fresh turkey, cranberry sauce, and left over stuffing on a crusty white bread - yummy!

I like making grilled hummus sandwiches. Prepare the bread like you are doing a grilled cheese, and fill with hummus. My favorite is the roasted red pepper hummus. Very good on 12 grain bread. You can add in other toppers like actual roasted red peppers, toasted pine nuts, spinach, etc.

Another good one is cooled chicken pulled into chunks, mix with chopped red onions, mandarin orange segments, dried cranberries, almond slivers, and sesame seeds, place into a pita with your favorite lettuce and some Asian salad dressing. This makes a good salad, too!!

I also like cream cheese on marbled pumpernickel/rye with alfalfa sprouts, avocado slices, and turkey bacon.

I love leftover baked potatoe sandwichs. I put a little mayo on the bread, some pepper, a little garlic powder, a slice of onion and the sliced potatoe. It really is good!

An interesting sandwich which surprises many with it's apparent popularity is found on diner menus all over. G'wan, check the menu at your local.

The ubiquitous sardine and onion sandwich.

I like Monte Cristo but they are not really on the menu anywhere. Being in CA and from NJ I also like porkroll, otherwise known as Taylor Ham and it is from Trenton, NJ. That with cheese and even eggs is very good. You can buy it from a meat vendor at the Farmers Market here in LA.

This one is actually quite popular down here in the south. We often make them up for our competitive cheeerleading squad, because it gives them good energy before competitions- potassium, protein, and carbs. (Although some people put mayo on it too, Ick!)

My weirdest favorite is one my grandmother got me hooked on when I was a kid, and I absolutely cannot eat since I've had the gastric bypass: white bread, mayo and potato chips. blush

Try:

[ Peanut butter, bacon, and thinly sliced apple on whole wheat - toasted or not.
Or
Mayo, liverwurst, sweet pickle.
Or
Peanut butter and a thick schmear of mayo on soft white.
Or
Tuna salad and pile on nacho flavored Doritos. Smoosh down the top bread to crush the chips!

  • tuna salad layered with potato chips
  • creton (french Canadian pork spread)...To name just a few.

I have tried the peanut butter-bacon one and peanut butter-banana. While I wouldn't pay the money for either of them in a restaurant - at home, I might do the peanut butter and banana one again.

My favorite is grilled cheese and tomato. Once it's cooked I slather grape jelly on top. The rest of my family thinks it sounds horrible, but it's actually very yummy.

I never throw away left over baked potatoes. They make good sandwiches! I slice the cold potato, leave the skin on, put mayo, salt and pepper on fresh bread, the sliced potato and sliced onion. MMMMMM-mmm-mm!
