I have arthritis in my hands. I am wondering if the electronic/computer machines are easier to use and cause less strain to hands.

Hi there!

I have a computer machine. It is a boon to be ale to just touch the display board on the machine and select a stitch. However, you still have to be able to guide and manage the fabric under the needle. A good machine will have a slower and faster "feed". That is important if you are having difficulty with your hands. Most important also, to be able to feed the project at a rate you can easily handle and control.

Look for a machine that has this feature over fancy bells and whistles.

Hope this helps,

Oh My, are they ever! I first tried one about 3 years ago at a sewing show. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The machines made my hobby of sewing come back for me.
After a highway accident I couldn't use my old sewing machine since it was too painful. I had
arthritis set in my neck and left arm/hand. (which tends to decide for me what I do)
The new machines let you create your sewing project just the same as before, they just sew without the physical effort.
Mine (Janome 1000 and other brands) allow you to pick the stich and the design. My machine even lets me know if I have something backwards or mis-threaded.
If you can bake a cake mix you can use one of these machines. What makes them physicaly easy is the system of "guiding" rather than "handling" the fabric through the machine.
Check out Rummage/sewing.com for some fantasic second hand buys. This site uses escrow for large purchaces. You might want to moniter it for a few months so you learn the market and know just what you are buying.
Don't pass up the perfect thing though! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
