Have we been sold a bill of goods by our mostly male medical doctors on what's good for us as pre-, post- and menopausal women?

What's going on in the medical profession? Many doctors have egg on their faces because of their prescribing hormones to all and sundry (women, that is.)

I guess we're not important enough for doctors to do their homework and research. It's been known for years, as shown in Prescription for Nutrtional Healing in 1997 that "Equine estrogen probably should not be used by women who are obese, who smoke cigarettes, or who suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or varicose veins."

Now, the papers are full of the exact same news reporting that a large study has been halted because of serious adverse effects with heart and blood clotting problems.

Seventeen million women in the US alone rely on Estrogen and Progestin in a specific formula to relieve flushing, heart problems, improve calcium absorption and prevent cancer. This now has been proven to be false treatment in many cases.

Oh Dear, the plot thickens.

Today's newspaper had an article implicating cancer, obesity and hormone replacement therapy.

From what I understand, it seems estrogen causes weight gain and weight gain causes cancer of the breast.

I'll read it more carefully and post further information on the subject.

Women certainly can't ignore all the information coming out in the last few weeks since the cancelling of the study on heart disease, blood clotting, and HRT. I've even heard of class action lawsuits being planned in the US with anyone reporting serious adverse effects asked to contact the head of the group.

You're right...we've certainly been sold a bill of goods.

The issue is becoming more and more complicated and women are being advised to stay away from hormone treatments for even a short period of time unless the symptoms are unlivable. There are so many alternatives though...and women are told that they should never take hormones for heart or breast cancer prevention.

However, the other day i read an article where a doctor was quoted that the new studies now being started to find out what's really going on...will in the end show that HRT and estrogen will be exonerated and will be used even more because they'll find other reasons why it's good for women's health.

I wonder what drug company he's being paid by...

Even though I'm fairly young for it (32) this has affected me sooner than I would have liked. I've been going through peri-menopause for about 5 years already but with my genetics it could go on for much longer EEK!

I've questioned the synthetic pills since talking to my MIL about hers. She had a hysterectomy oh probably 35 years ago and she's STILL on hormones. She said when she goes off them she gets thrown right back into the worst menopaus symptoms (night sweats, raging hotflashes, etc) and that SCARED me! I thought hormone replacement pills were 'temporary'.

I've just recently (two weeks now) gotten desperate enough to try progesterone cream (Emerita's Progest) as well as the Remifemin that I got in the 'Survival' packet from menopauserx.com and I'm hoping that something will help the symptoms I have. So far it SEEMS to be easing up the slightest bit but I can't say yet whether that's coincidence, all the extra vitamins I'm taking now or just wishful thinking. LOL

Something I've been wondering about... I did read a couple of snippets online that suggested Progesterone cream was no good and that at most it simply acted as 'valium' did in the system and THAT was why women claimed they felt better when using it? I do wonder a little about that although I keep using it twice a day anyway. I'm hopeful it will help me since it HAS helped women that I know IRL. What do you all know about Progesterone cream?

Hi There,

I use the progesterone creme myself as I see fit...not all the time, and it seems to help with the hot flashes to some extent.

However, I'd forgotten to replenish my supply recently and just realized that I hadn't had any for several months and I don't think I was any worse off without it.

My big problem is vaginal dryness, so I'm going to monitor it as to new effects since I just bought a new supply. I rub it on my underarms and breasts as well.

I believe the brand I use is plant based making it herbal and not a drug. I'm not absolutely certain though...even though I bought it at the health food store.

You're awfully young to be going into menopause. Is that a hereditary thing? I would have thought that it might just be a hormonal problem that you might be able to reverse with black cohosh or chaste berry or something like that. Have you checked that out?

I was on HRT for a year because of unbearable hotflashes and finally went off because I have never thought them to be good for women. Of course the hot flashes came back.
I now take herbs - Menopause Support by NOW(I think). To my surprise, they work as well of better than the hormones.
