They were pushed out of most of Massachusetts by the larger grey squirrels, and I rarely see them. But apparently one has found a hidey-hole in our back yard somewhere

Isn't he sweet. You must have a great camera to get such terrific closeup pictures (of course you're probably a great photographer too ). We've got both the red & grey squirrels in our yard. My dog goes nuts watching them from the window.

Actually, that tree is right off our back porch so it's easy to get the pictures from the kitchen. I have a Sony Mavica FD91 which is a digital camera with a great zoom. I don't have to be a good photographer at all I just take the photo, it auto-focusses for me, and then I crop it in Photoshop.

The squirrel was a cute subject for me!

Wow...what cute pics. We have red squirrels in central NY, but I've never seen one in my neighborhood. I do, however, see black ones at my feeders sometimes. I have a group of 10-15 gray ones that come every day...and expect a meal. I was determined a couple years ago to outsmart them but you just know who won that battle. So now, I feed them and enjoy their antics. I have a bread outlet store nearby where I can get day-old, etc for a nickel a package, and I watch for sales on peanut butter. Little sandwiches keep them happy, along with tons of sunflower seed. The new type feeder, with a spring loaded "over-lay" also works (so far). Their weight drops down a leaf-shaped over-lay that covers the seed ports. So far so good...If the springs don't eventually rust off, it'll have been a good investment. Isn't it amazing how they can hold their own weight with one toenail?? I get a real kick out of watching them.

Squirrels are really fun, if only they didn't eat up entire feeders worth of seed in one sitting!

You have *black* squirrels?? I still remember one of the first times I went to Canada and there were black squirrels everywhere. I was so intrigued by them. We don't have any at all in Massachusetts, at least that I'd seen. I thought of them as a Canadian thing, and then I saw a few in New York so I thought of them as a northern thing.

If you have them down south though (relatively south that is) I wonder why I don't see them around here. Maybe there are just very few of them in some places, sort of like this red squirrel being the first I've ever seen at this house in the past 7 years.

Do you have a camera you could take a picture of one with?

We actually have lots of black squirrels around here, but they seem to be in "pockets"...some areas have alot. I asked a wildlife rehab'er I know, and she said they are Eastern Gray Squirrels in a "black phase"...I don't think that means they'll turn gray. I'm pretty sure they inter-breed with the grays. At first I only saw one, with the large group of grays that come...then I started seeing 3, and 2 I think were babies. Hard to tell the babies, they're almost as big as the adults by the time they come around. Last June, I had an orphaned litter of 6 come down out of a big pine tree (screaming and crying for hours on their way down). They were no bigger than a 3 wk. old kitten. I finally coaxed a couple of the braver ones into my yard, and they ran right up my pants legs, out onto my arm to get the peanut butter sandwich I was enticeing them with. What a thrill!! I foolishly boosted them all into a hollow in my maple tree, and a raccoon got after them during the night. The two I saved, I took to the wildlife rehab'er the next day. I'll know not to leave them alone if it ever happens again. I think those big teeth the mom has are their only defense.

I saw some black ones years ago when I was in eastern Canada too. I thought they were beautiful! Just grey & red ones around here in central Canada, but I really like the little red ones. I wouldn't mind it if some black ones moved west to join us here though.
