anybody had somebody from the family who participated in the war? I had an uncle, he is the only survival from my family until now. His story is a strange one. I will talk about it later.

Jaga,,
I can speak from experience... I was there as an 18 year old American Infantry man.. Trust me.. Nothing you hear about it is exagerated,, what you see is exactly as it was. Two weeks after we landed the French welcomed us with wine apples and op[en arms.. What they dont tell you isd that two weeks prior to that.. The same French were kicking and spitting on downed Allied airmen as they marched them thru Paris. The French are VERMIN Frank

Frank,

did you really go to Normandy? You are a brave man! Tell us more about it.

My husband's uncle was in a second group which descended in Normandy, they had a better chance for survival than the first one.

Maybe you should believe what you saw with you own eyes (French greeting you with vine) than what somebody else said. There were some French who were cooperated with Nazi but the majority were against it like everywhere else in Europe.

Jaga,
In response to your post.. Yes I was there and watched the show from a British ship.. I too was one of the lucky ones..I was in a reserve unit, June 7th We were put ashore at Le Harve, But it was already secure. It looked like a piece of cake until we ran into our first combat hours later..You said that I was a brave man.. That is not true.. Along with the others .. I was scared to death.. The German soldier was a tough advesary..Actually most of us wanted to go ashore because the weather wss rough and most of us were sea sick.
We fought our way across France, but were not allowed to enter Paris.. This prize was Given To French General Le Clerc.. As we sat on the hard won road we watched the French go by in American tanks in clean uniforms waving to us.. I wanted to shoot at them.. We all felt the same way.
The only time that I got to see Paris was when I was wounded the first day in the Battle Of the Bulge in a place called THE SHNEE EIFFEL.
We had a saying.. ( What is it like to fight a war without the aid of the French ) Answer... WW2
I could go on for a long time.. But my War years ended when I was severely wound after crossing of the Rhine.. At the Ludendorf Bridge at Ramagen.. I was taken prisoner by the Germans.. The war for me was over..
Jaga I have no respect for the French.. They would be loyal to who ever was in charge at any given time..( They are VERMIN )

Frank

Jaga,

You had a thread on the Warsaw Uprising, but this article fits in this thread as well. SUnday evening there will be a CNN special:

http://www.pacwashmetrodiv.org/files/warsaw.cnn.pr.htm

On the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landing, CNN premieres a groundbreaking documentary on a little-known chapter in the war.
Warsaw Rising: The Forgotten Soldiers of World War II tells the story of the Polish resistance and its 63-day battle against the Nazis, a battle fought while the Western world celebrated the successful Allied landings at Normandy. Through interviews with survivors and use of rarely seen footage filmed by the Underground Army, CNN Presents offers an unflinching look at how a country known as the first ally was abandoned in its hour of need.
Warsaw Rising airs on Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. (ET) in conjunction with a special edition of People in the News that features four U.S. veterans who lived through the D-Day landing. People in the News D-Day: a Call to Courage airs Sunday, June 6, at 7 p.m. (ET). Warsaw Rising re-airs on Saturday, June 12, at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. (ET).

Kai, just to add a foot note to your post.
Yes I remember that incident..Just after the Russians murdered the Polish oficer at the Katyn Forrest near Smolensk.. Then tried to blame it on some body else.
During the Warsaw uprising they stopped short on the east bank of the Vistula river and allowed the Poles to be massacured...
With allies like the French and Russians... WHO NEEDS ENEMIES?? Frank

Frank,

I have an empty bottle of commemorative Bordeaux in front of me marking the 50th anniversary of the Normandy landing. Even the French are not immune to turning a profit - after they check to see who's flag is on the mast that morning! (I have heard that from several sources who came to the same conclusion decades apart).

Now I did read BIll Mauldin, who stated that the French did appreciate the Americans where the Italians were hostile (he came up through Italy with the forces and then came over to France). Of course that was well into our beating back the Germans and it was clear we would be the winners.

I appreciated growing up in the baby boom generation - no depression and no WW II. Just the American dream. That was screwed up a bit by Kennedy's assassination - we just did not assassinate presidents. And screwed by the Vietnam experience, which tore many of us out of the naive follower of whoever is elected category. I was lucky - drafted but not sent east.
Thanks for the service!

Kai

Frank,

thank you so much for your very personal rememberance of what happened! You are a brave man and the fact that you felt fear was very normal. This is a bravery, if you would not feel any fear you would be just plain stupid! Just like some kids which play sometimes risking their life not having any idea about a danger.

Frank, yes, I heard something about French not letting Americans enter Paris first. This was really a pity especially since the Americans were not going to occupy France just like Russians and Soviets did to us.
