Don't know about the gypsies in Eastern Europe but the Gitanos of Spain I always enjoy. In the Northern pat of Spain the Gitanos are recognized as a race. All the different music of Eastern Europe cannot be compared to a Juerga Flamenca that can last through a whole night. an old gitano say is that "a person with no music in their heart is not a person" (rough translation).
The history of the gypsies is very interesting and ranges from India, to the Middle East and into Europe. I think their perserverence through the ages is something to be respected. As a matter of fact, I think we all have a bit of wander lust in us or else why would we travel so far on our vacations. If you really want to see some Gitano life, then visit Granada sometime.

It is interesting to know also that gipsies are in South America. As for Gitanos - I wonder whether they are not related to gipsies. While writing the last aricle I saw a CD about flamenco gipsy music. I even linked it on the site - I wonder now - whether it is gitanos or gipsies music. I am glad you posted the information about it here!

Yes Jaga, gitano is the Spanish word for gypsy. It seems this group of gypsies may have come down from Northern Africa, Morocco, Algiers etc. and took up residence in Spain. The gypsies may be decendents of a military group because many of their words are military in nature: i.e. gadjo or "stranger" has the same meaning as "enemy".

We had gypsies in Russia. They'd hang out around the bazaar and steal money. Love their culture though.

Once the gypsy woman cheat me with money... but I was also stupid to let her cheat me! But, I saw different gipsy people, they have their own culture, they are very religious and generally good people!

I've never seen a religious gypsy. What was their religion? I'd think Hinduism, because India is where they originated, isn't it?
