The family and I are off to Las Vegas for the holidays. "Family" in this case are two mid-60s retired adults and their two mid-30s adult children.

What do you recommend for when we need a break from the gaming tables? What shows were your faves? We are big Cirque du Soleil fans, so that one is the leading contender.

I went to Vegas a year or two ago and am not a big gamer at all. Be warned that those shows are HUGELY expensive and often have to be reserved for in advance. So check on that first.

There's the Star Trek Experience if you're a Star Trek fan at all, I enjoyed that a lot. And most of the time I spent just going around from casino to casino and marvelling at the architecture they use. The Venetian was my favorite - they have an actual canal with gondolas on the SECOND FLOOR with a ceiling that goes from morning to night to morning again!

A lot of casinos have free shows, like the pirate show and so on ... <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

At the airport or your hotel's concierge, get a listing and map of all the hotels on the strip with their outside and FREE shows. (i.e., Treasure Island's pirate show, etc.,)

We enjoyed the outdoor shows and walking through the Venetian and, of course, Caesar's Palace. Each of the resorts has a theme and shops/shows to reflect that theme. We actually spent very little time gaming in the casinos.

Sometimes (only sometimes) you can ask a casino floor manager or at the hotel front desk to see if they have any available (last minute) show tickets. Some hotels have an agreement with certain shows/hotels for a certain number of "giveaway" show tickets. There are not many and the giving is at the discrimination of the hotel manager, casino manager, etc. It does not hurt to gently ask, "Do you know of any tickets that might be available here for _____? (I used to work for Harrah's in the Sales Department.)

Also, if you do choose to game - you don't always have to throw away tons of cash to get comps/dinners/tickets to shows. Ask! If you are not rude and don't show with attitude, you might get a pleasant surprise.

Las Vegas over the last several years has expanded their entertainment considerably. Ask the concierge, a cab driver or a casino-working local about their off-time favorites!

If you can rent a car, I'd suggest getting out of the strip area and visiting the mountains, red rock canyon area...it's beautiful. Also right outside the city is a wild west town which is really cool for the kids (I can't think of the name but it's a well known place) and then of course you have to go to the Ethel M factory for a chocolate tour and check out the gardens they have -- incredible. And one more suggestion...there is a restaurant outside the strip (in one of the suburbs about 10 minutes from the strip) called The Blueberry Pancake house or Blueberry Hill Pancake house...it is incredible...the best pancakes you will ever have. And make sure you visit the old section of town by the Golden Nugget and see the light display on the canopy...it's really cool.

Oh...and the Rio...they have a circus in the sky above the casino or shopping area which is awesome and at Caesar's Palace be sure to check out the statue show (in the shopping arcade) which pretty awesome too!

Have a great time

Excellent, ladies!

I don't have to sweat the ticket prices on shows, as Mom and Dad are handling the arrangements and payment for that part.

My sister mentioned us taking the rental car and getting away from the folks to these hot springs she's found for a day. She is a bona fide outdoor enthusiast so there might be a hike in there somewhere.

I AM a big Star Trek fan, and the family has already been warned about us "needing" to go check that out. I think they're all really glad we're taking the family vacation after the premieres of the new Star Trek and LotR movies as I will be temporarily sated on those fronts....
