I have been really mean to my hair. I have used Henna in it for quite some time which I have loved. I thought I would try something different, so I put a "wash out in 24 washes" color over it. I used a dark brown and needless to say, it was not washing out; and I didn't really like the color on me. Well, rather than waiting it out, I went out an bought Loreal Color Zap to get most of the dark color out. Well it worked, but the roots of my hair (new growth) turned a lot lighter than the rest of my hair. I used a medium golden brown "wash out in 24 washes" color after I used the Color Zap and it worked nicely except for the lighter roots. I guess my question is, what can I do about the roots? and when do you think I can use Henna again? I would really appreciate any help I can get on this! Thank you!

Suzanne,
All I can say is that you should be patient and let your hair rest for a while. Use lots of conditioner on it and if the roots don't "shout" lighter, ignore them.
Using more and more color, including henna might at best build up on your porous hair and at worst, really cause a problem with the condition.

If the roots are too much to ignore, it would be best if you only applied haircolor to them and not the rest of the hair. It would be easier if you can get someone else to do that.

I used to put henna on my hair to lighten it up from brown to red, and then apply hot pink hair stain. Using henna can make your hair a lot more porous than you might imagine.

I've heard that henna really damages hair - that is, causes problems with condition. Is that the general rule?

(It's the reason I haven't tried it. I have extremely fine hair.)
