we're growing some lovely basil here, with the plans of making homemade pesto later this summer.

does anyone have any experience with the varieties of basil out there? any suggestions for which types bring what flavor differences?

Hi Rae,

i think there is 9 species of basil. Each variety of basil can add an accent to a garden: dark opal offers stunning purple foliage and mauve flowers; the miniature or bush basil is especially attractive for borders; the ruffled varieties (O. basilicum 'PurpleRuffles' and O. basilicum 'Green RuMes') offer unique textures.

I found this article, there you can find more info about all species of basil and how to grow them:

Good luck!

I love basil. I tried to grow one plant in a 10" pot this year. It did fairly well early on. Now however it does not look so healthy and is not producing many new leaves. Some of the branches have turned yellow and the leaves also. I have been pinching back the white flowers as often as possible. Do I need to put it in a shady spot for the duratioin of the summer? Thanks

Summer6, you could have a bug problem.
I had huge years old basil bushes at our old home in florida. aside form the occassional case of bugs and root rot from the hurricanes I had no problems keeping the plants in full sunlight all year-round.

Hello, I think I need to plant in the ground next year as everyone whose plants in the ground around here seems to have big leaves on their plants. OR I need to go to a bigger pot. Maybe that should do the trick. Have a nice day
