I really want to get biking this year, but the poor bike wasn't on the road at all last year. What do I have to do to get it ready for at least a little bit of riding?

Hi Lisa!

Great question. Since you're bike wasn't used much last year, I'd recommend bringing it in to a bike shop for a basic tuneup. This would run anywhere up to $40 depending on the shop, and they will perform basic maintenance on your bike to ensure that it is in proper working order. A tuneup should include adjustments to your brake bads, brake and shifting cables, tires, and attention to general bike health.

If you prefer to take care of your bike yourself, Bicycling.com has an excellent Bike Care Calendar that tells you what you should be doing each month of the cycling year.

Happy Riding!

I guess if it's only about $40 that it makes more sense for me to bring it in to a shop. There's one down the street here that I trust, maybe I can get to that on the weekend. I just have to get my boyfriend's car cleaned out to bring them there - my new-to-me Mustang doesn't have room! The old one was larger in back and I could throw my bikes in it.

If it's close enough (and a safe street), you should just ride the bike down to the shop!
