When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest? So, you "squeeze" for freshness or softness or you check the pricing.

Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week? Monday,Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I was also told that each day has a different color twist tie. eek They are:

Monday - Blue
Tuesday - Green
Thursday - Red
Friday - White
Saturday - Yellow

So if today was Thursday, you would want a red twist tie - not white which is Fridays (almost a week old)!

The colors go alphabetically by color (easy to remember) Blue - Green - Red - White - Yellow,
Monday thru Saturday.

I thought this was an interesting idea. So, I started to look in the grocery store and the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the ones with the plastic clips are color coded. Check with your grocer to see if the code is the same as above!!!

You learn something new everyday!!! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread, choose the color for the day you are shopping.

Oh...THANK YOU!!! You may have saved my marriage. My husband is constantly complaining about old bread and that I am not able to pick out fresh bread. I make him do it since I can't seem to get the 'squeeze' test down correctly.

You are correct. Just about everything we eat has a coding system. Some we can read, such as "sell by" , "best if used by" etc... or some that only a select few know what it is - IEX3KNW.

Breads sometimes have dates or they use the color code system or a combination of both. Each manufacturer has their own system, so Yellow for one may be Tuesday and for another it may Saturday.

Check with your grocer, they should know. If not, most companies have a customer service number. They may not divulge their secrets but they can tell you if that item is fresh or not. Your health department is also a source, if these don't work out.

Hope this helps.

That's great to know! I also find it's easy to make your own bread with a breadmaker, the ingredients are cheap. You start it on a timer and wake up to fresh bread <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Or make it first thing in the morning and it's ready for you <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I do love fresh bread, though!
