On this day in 2006 – August 24th – a vote by the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union changed the classification of Pluto from planet to the new category dwarf planet.

Two of the reasons for the reclassification were Pluto's small size (smaller than the Moon) and its highly elliptical tilted orbit which overlaps with that of Neptune.
