On this day in 1951 – May 26th – the first American woman in space, Sally Ride, was born in Encino, California.

Ride – physicist, engineer, educator and astronaut – made her first flight being almost twenty years to the day after cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the very first woman in space.
