On this day in 1969 - October 23nd - the discovery of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was announced by the discoverers to the Central International Bureau of Astronomical Telegrams.

This is the comet on which ESA's Rosetta spacecraft and the lander Philae lie after two years of studying it.
