A lot of people do not realize it but Mardi Gras originated in Mobile Alabama. Here is an easy King Cake Recipe that uses canned biscuits.

King Cake

1 16oz can of regular biscuits (not flaky kind)
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 TBS cinnamon (optional)
Cream Cheese Frosting (optional)
Sprinkles in Mardi Gras Colors (purple, gold/yellow and Green)
Tiny Babies (can get them at craft store)

(Alternatively you can simply color your sugar by putting one drop of coloring in white sugar)

Oven: 325 degrees

Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. Open can of biscuits and lay them flat on the parchment, press into a large rectangle, like pizza dough.

Put softened butter over dough, sugar, cinnamon and sprinkle over the dough evenly. You can put cream cheese, nuts, anything you like in the center. Place babies in dough someplace, spreading out.

Roll the dough as if you're going to make cinnamon rolls but instead form into an oval like race track.

Bake about 35 minutes until it looks done. Let cool, spoon icing over the top and let it fall down the sides. Then sprinkle on colored sugars.

This cake is supposed to be eaten warm.

Another alternative is to use your normal coffee cake recipe, or cinnamon roll recipe, then cover with the traditional colors.

Warning: Be careful with the babies, tell people the babies are in there so a tooth won't get broken. smile
