Phyllis, I thought about emailing you this, or adding it on to the current Tibet thread going in the Buddhism forum, but then decided to post it here, as others may be interested too. If it's too off-topic, please remove and I'll add it there instead!
I have recently been reading about the correspondences between the Hopi and Tibetan cultures, I guess this was first put forth in The Book of the Hopi by Frank Waters. One of the connections is that the Hopi's Black Mesa and the Tibetan sacred mountain Mt. Kailash are exactly opposite each other on the earth, and that several words in the two cultures 'mirror' each other. The Dalai Lama has met with Hope elders several times, and many people feel there are profound similarities between the creation stories and rituals of the two cultures.
I had heard about these connections years ago, but only recently started researching them again, potentially for an article. Have you read anything about this, or do you have any recommended resources?

Thomas O. Mills has written a book he titled, The Truth, regarding a connection between the Hopi and Egypt and Tibet. I have not read it, but it is on my list of "books to read".

The Hopi, during their centuries of travel after emergence from the first three worlds, is explained in detail in Frank Waters The Book Of The Hopi, which is like a Bible to the present day Hopi.

I do not know enough about the possible connections with Tibet, but, that may explain why I feel it right to combine Buddhism beliefs with Native American for a peaceful belief system of my own.

Research into the Tibet/Hopi would be very interesting and enlightening, I am sure. Maybe you and I can corroborate on some research and articles on this subject. smile

This post reminded me of something I have mentioned before. My friend was in Tibet 2 years ago. She emailed me about seeing so many people there wearing Native American T-shirts.

She was up in the hills around small villages, and could not figure out how they got all those T-shirts. I asked her to please find out for me as well.

She finally asked her Monk guide and his response was short.
"We are related."
This connection must be widely accepted, both in the Monasteries and by the locals.

I wonder if any of the genetic tests have validated this relation?

These are interesting points to ponder:

If you went straight through the Hopi Reservation to the other side of the world, you would come out in Tibet. The Tibetan word for sun is the Hopi word for moon, and the Hopi word for sun is the Tibetan word for moon.

This could explain the Hopi story of Emergence. They emerged from a hole in the ground. Is this how they could have originally come from Tibet which is at the exact opposite of the Hopi Reservation?

"When the iron eagle flies and horses run on wheels, the Tibetan people will be scattered over the earth and the dharma will go to the land of the red man." --- Padmasambhava, 8th c.

"When the iron bird flies, the red-robed people of the East who have lost their land will appear, and the two brothers from across the great ocean will be reunited." -- Hopi Prophecy

The Hopi believe Emergence to the Fifth World has already begun. The Dalai Lama has visited the Hopi in their land. The Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Buddhists have lost their land in Tibet.

In the Hopi prophecy it says:

"My people await Pahana, the lost White Brother, (from the stars) as do all our brothers in the land. He will not be like the white men we know now, who are cruel and greedy. we were told of their coming long ago. But still we await Pahana.

"He will bring with him the symbols, and the missing piece of that sacred tablet now kept by the elders, given to him when he left, that shall identify him as our True White Brother."

These tablets are kept in Tibet. It sounds to me as if the "True White Brother" is the Dalai Lama.

These are excellent, thank you. I had read about the Frank Waters book, but not yet read it. I had not heard of the Mills book, but will HAVE to get it, as Egypt is another one of my passions! More for my summer reading list, I guess...

Phyllis, thanks so much for sharing those excerpts. They are truly uncanny.

Another similarity I've been curious about is the Buddhist Mandala sand art and the similar Native American sand art, both used in ceremonies. Another word similarity is Mandala and Mandela, both referring to circular art and ceremony pieces.

I didn't know about the geographical connection. That's interesting. Has the Dalai Lama written anything about his visit to the Hopi? I have a few of his books, and would certainly like to read about that.

Lisa, The Book of the Hopi, by Frank Waters is excellent. He got all his information from 30 elders and it is considered the Hopi Bible. I am curious about the Mills book and would like to read it.

Icp, I do not know if the Dalai Lama has written anything on these connections. I would be delighted if he has. I will check with my son on this subject. My son is a Buddhist teacher. He has been practicing Buddhism for several years now. He once met the Dalai Lama in person. He had attended a lecture in a huge hall with 100's of people. My son said that even though the hall was so large and there were so many people, the instant he walked in the door he felt this tremendous aura of peace and compassion which came from the Dalai Lama and touched everyone there.

I am really interested in this subject also and will be doing a lot of research on it. I noticed that some of the names of the first peoples in the Hopi Creation stories sound very much like Tibetan names. I will research that also.

I can't even imagine being in the same room with the Dalai Lama. That would blow me away! How fortunate for your son to hear him speak in person.

Here is an article I happened upon while researching something else (which is how I got re-interested in this topic recently):

The Tibet-Pueblo Connection

He references a lot of sources here, and presents some skeptical views as well...
