Welcome to the BellaOnline Tarot Book Club! The Tarot Book Club will officially launch in September 2008. September seems like the perfect time to begin a book club. The energy at the tail end of "summer" lends itself to cozy curling up with a good book. In our case, it means a good book and a good deck - of tarot cards, to apply the principles discussed in the tarot books selected. Each month, a new book will be featured, augmented with a forum discussion where you can share your questions, opinions, and insights about the Month's Selection. If you wish to participate in the discussion, click on the banner below to learn more.

I'm not sure if anyone has managed to buy this book, but I was wondering - does anyone have any questions about it?

October 2008 Book Club Selection

Tarot Theory and Practice: A Revolutionary Approach to how the Tarot Works

Tarot Book Club Selection of the MonthOur book selection for the month of October 2008 is Tarot Theory and Practice, an intriguing book written by author Ly de Angeles. This book offers a very interesting perspective on the use of the Tarot to connect with the future and the other "worlds" that surround us all. If you wish to join in the discussion, you can buy the book online from Llewellyn or Amazon. by: Ly de Angeles ISBN: 0738711381 (10); 978-0738711386 (13) 8.9 x 7.5 x 0.8 inches , 312 pages, soft cover Release Date:November 2007 Publisher: Llewellyn Publications Price: under $14

My Review of Our Selection

This book is certainly worth the modest sum - it is a culmination of a way of life, a reflection of a very gifted author, artist, theatre mistress, pagan expert, and tarot guru, Ly de Angeles. Before getting into this book I wanted to quote a short piece from Ly's website that puts her entire approach into perspective. Ly comments on what she is passionate about in this current time: "The art of clear communication, history, mythology, the legends of 'Celtic' ancestry, debating with strong-willed, good-humoured people, all the wild things and all the wild places, a sense of humour. I'm known to be pretty outspoken on matters pertaining to the sustainability and guardianship of earth and the rights of all species to self-determination and I prefer the company of animals to most people. One of my major studies over the past twenty years has been the history of the usurpation of indigenous people through invasion and subsequent colonisation - mainly since the Roman Empire - and the history and mythology of Ireland and Britain in particular." ( direct quote from Ly de Angeles official website)

Theoretical Groundings

Whenever one considers theory it is always wise to acquaint oneself with the theorist in order to put the intellectual exercise into context and perspective. The above quote does this beautifully, and reflects the manner in which Ly approaches tarot theory and practice. This book is NOT just a dry exercise in theory though - Ly offers very practical approaches to apply the theory to the practice of prophesy, predictions, working with the concept of time and reality, self protection, and so on. This book is suitable for all levels of tarot awareness from beginner right up to advanced expert. It offers something to everyone. Ms de Angeles begins the theoretical discussion by examining time from a number of perspectives, leading to an integration of quantum time and physics and how are reality is shaped by our perceptions and perspective. She looks at how thought conditions our ability to manifest reality and how the tarot can be influenced by our thought patterns and vice versa. She does an excellent job of placing us, as beings, into the whole realm of the tarot and its archetypes and meanings.

Defining the Tarot

She also discusses at length just what the Tarot is...and what it is not. I quote.."Tarot is not a tool of comfort, advice, past-life analysis, or spiritual/emotional/psychological analysis - it will only ever tell the client what they will experience or know, no matter what the client wants you to tell them. It is blunt and as often disturbing as it is reassuring..." (p.22). Ly likens reading the tarot to "...becoming a computer-priest technician, software creator, consultant, and hacker; understanding symbols and utilizing every bit of possible data that is available in both the world as we know it and the world we may not yet recognize or understand" (p.22).

Tarot and Energy Fields

I found Ly's description of the energetics of tarot reading both fascinating and usable. She describes how the energy fields works as:
  • The Client is the Transmitter
  • The Reader is the Receiver
  • This energy relationship activates a third force - The Unknown
  • This allows the Tarot to act as a Medium for Prophesy
Coupled with this above model is the theory of multiple realities - which embraces quantum time, reincarnation or multiple lives and the holism of the spirit. She ventures into the notion that we can apply our awareness of our multiple selves across our many lives to the process of tarot awareness and interpretation. It is not so much "past or future lives" as "simultaneous" ones, that can be tapped and glimpsed while reading the cards.

Practice Applications

Besides the generous chapters on theory, Ly also presents the expected chapters on the individual cards and their meanings, several useful spreads you can experiment with, plus visualizations, exercises, meditations, and ways to work in a group with other tarot enthusiasts. She even gives well proven advice on how to "set up shop" as a tarot reader on a professional level. This book is a great investment and worthy of discussion here in the BellaOnline forums. Why not check it out and join in on the discussion?

Yay! An exciting topic worth diving into. (I'm sorry, I'm somewhat new to Bella online) Is there a particular book being discussed right now? I use several different decks depending on my mood and how I want to "hear" the info. Do other people do that as well?

Thank you
-Bast
