You would have believed it that alcohol makes fruit even better for you - so say's this article from BBC News

Interesting! I usually throw a little alcohol in at least some of my jars of home-canned fruit because it tends to make them more gourmet for giving as gifts and I've found that they last much longer (they may or may not be less likely to spoil, but things like brandied pears taste fresh for years.)
