since no one is posting in this, does that mean that no one in this forum likes bowling? I am an above average bowler and will gladly help with any problems anyone has....if anyone reads this

I like to bowl and did not know there was bowling here. I have not fully explored all the topics yet. This past March we had a bowling party for my son's tenth birthday.

The only problem is that no one showed up. I paid $200+ for the party, reserved the lanes. We did the invitations for all the classmates in the third grade, some forgot the invites and due to language barriers and cultural differences the message did not get home to parents. Also the kids were stuck on what RSVP meant.

I would like my son to join a bowling league. I enjoyed one when I was in my early teens. It is a great summer activity since it is Air Conditioned and exercise.

200+???? I work at a center. We charge a $60 minimum and anything over ten people is just $6 per person. For what you paid, you would have had to had about 33 people bowl. That includes shoes, lanes, ice, etc. Sorry about your ordeal though. If you do get him in league, feel free to post any questions on here. I'm not the moderator, but noone seems to come on here, so I can handle ANY questions for you. I love bowling and am currently at a 190 average. You should take up bowling in league too. It is a great fun sport.

I am currently bowling in my first league. I bowled quite a bit growing up, but never for any real competition. I am enjoying it and I will be bowling in a fall league as well. I do ok, but I am not very consistent. I normally have 1 really bad game, 1 really good game, and 1 ok game.

What is your style? Are you righty or lefty, ball speeed, straight ball or hook? Just a few general tips: If your ball is going too far left, move left. If it is going too far right, move right. Take it slow. Don't try to muscle the ball. Just throw it and let the ball do the work. Also, what weight do you throw? I love coaching, so let me know if you need something. Good luck in your league. I bowl league tonight, and I will post and let you know how I did. Last week I shot a 277. So close to my 300. Dang nervousness...

TODAY'S TIP (from experience): Be sure to have a ball that fits properly and is comfortable to you.

Tonight I had a 204, 179, and 114 for a huge 497 series (my average was 186). Near the end of the second game and all through the third game, my thumb was killing me. My thumbhole is way too big causing me to squeeze in my backswing, which formed a blister right where my thumb meets my palm. It is extremely hard to throw with a blistered thumb. it killed me that third game. That was my lowest game in two years. be sure you have a ball properly drilled to fit your hand so that it is comfortable to you at all times. Otherwise, you will be extremely sorry. trust me.

sure lots of people like bowling. just go to one of the bowling forum sites (ballreviews.com, bowlingballexchange.com, etc) where people actually know something about bowling instead of your stupid Gary King. Maybe one day he will learn something about bowling and the bowling section of this site will be worth a [censored].

I am a member of www.bowl.com and www.ballreviews.com I heard a little bit about his review. The brunswick thing right? Well, when a company loses 1.5 million dollars a year, it is time for something to change. I just like to help people out. I'm not worried about him. I can make this site worth a [censored] (as you put). Hope I can be of some help one day.

not just the brunswick article. read all of his articles. the problem with bowling is the sanctioning body. the abc was is in a steady state of decline and now the usbc is out to kill bowling.

I'll have to sit down and read them one day. But it really doesn't matter. What they are trying to change will make very little to no effect on bowling. But the thing about having to have a USBC logo on every ball is BS. I know that every ball manufacturer is against this and I have two videos from Brunswick demonstrating the difference between two balls with different CGs and weight holes. There is NO difference. Bowling gets no respect today anyway. Oh well, I still enjoy it.

do you bowl actual league or are you an open bowler? If you bowl league, what is your average? Congrats on your 107. Good luck next time.

Greenteayum,
Yeah, traditional bowling is just a LITTLE bit different than candlepin. There's still ten pins on the lane, they are just not spaced out as far and you get to throw a heavier ball at them. Definately a lot easier.

Cookie,
What weight do you use? The heavier weight you can throw, the more pin action you can get. Lighter balls have a tendency to just bounce off the pins. And we don't want that do we? You want the ball to drive through the pins. Also, if you learn to hook the ball instead of throwing it straight, you will increase your pin action. Plus it gives you more room for error. As far as bowling in the league go, the lower average you set, the higher your handicap. So it will still work out. But you will continue to get better. Trust me. Just keep trying.

When I started oh gees I think about 5 months ago I was using a 6 pounder now I use an 8 and a 10 in the same game the 10 starts to feel a little lighter everytime I use an 8 with the 10 in the same game, I have feeling you are going to tell me that I shouldnt be doing that I'll keep trying thanks wakka

There is nothing wrong with switching weights. Sometimes a light ball is better for spares than a heavier ball. For example, if you are shooting at the 3-10 (or the 2-7) (the baby splits) then you want the ball to deflect off of the 3 pin and hit the ten. If it drives too hard, it will blow by the ten, causing an open. It is good that you are increasing the weight. Learn to hook it and you will start seeing higher games. Any help you need, just let me know. Good luck and many strikes

Cosmic is fun if you're trying to just have fun or like you said, an evening out with friends. duckpin is one of your favorites? I've never tried it. Where are you from that you got to play that?

I bowled competitively from the time I was 5 until I was 15. I absolutely despise bowling to this day. I liked it then, and was never made to do it. However, my older brother bowled on the same league I did and if I didn't bowl I would have to watch. So I decided I would do it. My brother still bowls to this day, and has bowled 8 300 games. He is very good at it, and actually thought about going pro. It's just not for me.

I grew up in Maryland. Some of our local bowling alleys used to have both duckpin and regular bowling. Duckpin has much smaller pins and the ball can fit in your palm and has no finger holes. It was a winner among the little kids because the bowling balls were lighter and easier to throw down the alley!

I recently went with some of my friends to an old duckpin alley and we had a blast (from the past!)...Fun times!

LadyViper,
If you bowled for 10 years, why do you despite it today? I understand that some sports are just not for some people, but why for ten years then start hating it? Just burnt out?

WW13,
Ok. A northerner. I knew I've never heard of any duckpin alleys in Arkansas or anywhere in the south. Bowling is always fun to do with friends, and I'm glad you had a good time.

Haha yes, a northerner indeed. I live in the DC area now and haven't seen duckpin in a long time (it used to be a kids favorite, but now it seems that lanes have gutter-blockers for the kids)...Last year I went to an old duckpin alley in Baltimore and it was hilarious, but fun...

I've been bowling since I was 6 years old and average about 170. I just introduced my youngest to it last summer with an adult/junior league, and she's fallen in love with it too. It's a great sport for us to do together, especially since it's the only sport I can do at all. She's averaging 120 after only a year and got the high scratch game award for girls this year.

There's a cute (I think so, at least) story about bowling with my son posted on my Authors Den pages if you're interested.

I've taken about 6 weeks off of bowling, but will start again the 31st. I'm changing houses (major conflicts with the manager of the local center) and will be driving about a hour and a half (one way) to bowl. I'm a diehard Track loyalist.

Joyce,
How old is your youngest? After a year, I think I was only about a 90 average or so. I'm up to around 190 now (8 years later) but still learning everyday. Congrats on her award.

Wow, a 1 1/2 hour drive is real dedication! We have a monopoly of only AMF centers around here, and the managers rotate every few years.

My youngest is almost 13, so besides being happy that she took so well to bowling, I'm thrilled that she's willing to even be seen in public with me! I also have a 17-year-old daughter who--like her mother--is not an athlete, and she plans to take bowling in school this year as her final required P.E. credit. I wish it had been offered when I was in school--I coulda been a contender! :-)

Yeah, that's the great thing about bowling. It is a great sport for the family, or for 17 year old to participate in with her friends. Good to hear about all that.
