EarthSky reminds us:
Quote:
November’s wonderful Leonid meteor shower happens every year around November 17 or 18, as our world crosses the orbital path of Comet Tempel-Tuttle. Like many comets, Tempel-Tuttle litters its orbit with bits of debris. It’s when this cometary debris enters Earth’s atmosphere, and vaporizes, that we see the Leonid meteor shower. In 2017, the peak night of the shower is expected from midnight to dawn on Friday and Saturday mornings (November 17 and 18). Best yet, there is no moon to intrude on the Leonid meteor shower in 2017.

The Leonid meteor shower gets its name from its radiant in the constellation Leo the lion. (The radiant is the point in the sky where the meteors appear to come from - it's a perspective effect.)

Here's a view of the Leonids you won't see! It's of Leonid meteors viewed from space. The image is a composite of meteor images recorded by a CCD camera onboard NASA's MSX satellite in November 1997.

Malcolm Park (North York Astronomical Association) made this composite photo of meteor activity in Ontario. It's mostly Leonids from the night of November 16/17, but it may included the odd Taurid too. What a beautiful sky.

The Leonids are usually not exceptional viewing, even at the peak. But every now and again they put on a spectacular extravaganza of a display.

Here is an engraving of the 1833 Leonid meteor shower by Adolf Vollmy, based on a painting by Karl Jauslin
Quote:
which, in turn, was based on a first-person account of the 1833 storm by a minister, Joseph Harvey Waggoner, who saw the 1833 shower on his way from Florida to New Orleans. In that famous shower, hundreds of thousands of meteors per hour were seen! It was the first meteor storm of modern times. [Eleanor Imster, EarthSky]

In 1966 North Americans got a display numbering 100,000 shooting stars per hour. There have been other pretty special Leonid showers since then - though I've never seen one - but nothing like the 1966 storm.
