I am reminded of the value of companion animals on a nightly basis. My cat runs to the bed, and she is waiting on my pillow when I get there. She lets me know that it is time to sleep, not time to read, by walking on my Kindle. Then, she presents her head for petting. Finally, when she has soaked up enough petting to satisfy her need for attention, she lays lengthwise on my leg. Her weight settles me. As I drift off, my muscles slacken, and Sissy jumps off my leg and goes to her preferred place to sleep. She has done her job and helped me to drift off to that place where ideas play around in the mind, so that they can pop out during the day.
