People can write poetry about anything near to their hearts, so you won't be surprised to know that many write about aspects of space and astronomy. Astronomers without Borders (AWB) regularly feature it on their website.

I liked this haiku from Bucharest. I occasionally see multiple Suns at sunrise or sunset when it reflects off the windows of buildings. Beautiful sight.

A number of years ago I wrote about the book Dark Matter: Poems of Space. It was edited by a poet and a prominent astronomer.

Many of the poems aren't really about space, they're about Earth and its people. An amusing one is Scottish poet by Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) called "First Men on Mercury". How do Earthlings treat other? The Mercurians have their number!

Looking at the stars in the stillness of night . . . But there's a lot of action in the sky. Which constellations can you recognize?

PEACE ON EARTH

The Archer is wake!
The Swan is flying!
Gold against blue
An Arrow is lying.
There is hunting in heaven--
Sleep safe till to-morrow.

The Bears are abroad!
The Eagle is screaming!
Gold against blue
Their eyes are gleaming!
Sleep!
Sleep safe till to-morrow.

The Sisters lie
With their arms intertwining;
Gold against blue
Their hair is shining!
The Serpent writhes!
Orion is listening!
Gold against blue
His sword is glistening!
Sleep!
There is hunting in heaven--
Sleep safe till to-morrow.

The winter solstice is a turning point of the year. From then on the days will be getting longer.

WINTER SOLSTICE

I stayed at my desk
Just for sunshine on my face
While the sun lasted.

All these tiny lights
Linked up in a lovely mesh
Illumine our town.

Woken out of sleep
Hours before morning light:
The year’s longest night.

Thank you, Mona. I find myself waking in the pre-dawn hours many times throughout the winter months. This was lovely!

Shooting star

In the cold night,
I saw you cross sweetly
the dreams of those who daydream.

American poet Robert Frost (1874-1963) was a keen observer of the night sky, and many of his poems reflect this. Here is one.

CANIS MAJOR

The great Overdog,
That heavenly beast
With a star in one eye,
Gives a leap in the east.

He dances upright
All the way to the west,
And never once drops
On his forefeet to rest.

I'm a poor underdog,
But to-night I will bark
With the great Overdog
That romps through the dark.

Robert Frost, 1928 (TOAOAL-II, pg. 1144)
