Northern lights have been seen in various places for the last month. A few days ago two coronal mass ejections caused a series of aurorae in the northern US states, Canada and Scandinavia. Here is a beautiful aurora taken recently in Norway. This formation is called a corona because the lights seem to converge overhead - this is actually just a perspective effect.

Here's another early September aurora photo. This one comes from Sweden and not only contains a splendid aurora above the lights of Östersund, but also the Milky Way.

These are two things I never see from where I live - too much light pollution to see the Milky Way or an aurora, even when they are fairly far south.
