My mother taught me how to knit when i was a child, but now i have forgot all of that. Thanks for your sharing, i can learn from it now.

My mom didn't really know how - she did teach me to crochet, though. That is nice you got to learn from your Mom!

Thanks AKLisa for your article link. It is really awesome and just what I needed to get my girls started. I did crochet too. My grandmother taught me that! I always found that easier than knitting to be honest - and faster!

Worsted weight yarn is yarn that knits at a gauge of 4 or 5 stitches per inch. The ball band should say what the yarn weight is. This is a very common weight of yarn throughout North America. Big Store brands like Red Heart, Patons, and Lion offer lots of colors in worsted weight yarn. A smaller local yarn store would also carry a variety of worsted weight yarns, as they are so commonly used.

I used to find crocheting easier, as that is what my Mom taught me to do. When I was first learning to knit, I had to force myself not to slip back into crocheting as it was easier when I was first learning to knit. Allyson, your girls are lucky to get to learn at a young age! perhaps they won't feel as dependent on one type of fiber craft.

They come in handy sometimes! I have used things my parents/grandparents taught me (in creative ways) and people nowadays are astounded by them...something simple like threading a cord through an apron with a safety pin. People nowadays are amused by that. Maybe I'm getting too old and panicky!lol...

My twins are very great artists..and I want capture that and keep them going with their passion. Knitting, crocheting, sewing are all creative arts along with drawing and painting (which they love).. their report cards at the end of the school year exceeded grade level standards! I am focusing on that as well as the other stuff they aren't great at! lol

There are a lot of educators that believe that teaching skills like knitting, crocheting and sewing not only develop fine motor skills, but also help lengthen attention spans, attention to details, ability to delay gratification, boost confidence and more. I hope that these crafts continue on so that young digital natives retain the best of the old style skills to help them in the newer digital world.

I love teaching kids, some catch on so quickly and it's always nice to see them entering something at the fair later.
