I understand that many will not share my sentiments about this, but I have found that one way to simplify my life, especially during high stress times, is to opt out.

We put too many unnecessary pressures on us, mostly social pressures, to conform to outside standards. Does your child need a full-blown birthday party every single year? Do you have to have the Norman Rockwell Thanksgiving every year?

Who sets these standards? We do. And we can change them, too. One year, my immediate family decided to take a mini-vacation instead of hosting Thanksgiving. We also opted out of Christmas gifts. The relief from all the pressure was a true gift.

We can always resort to our old habits and traditions when we like, and when we have the energy and resources, but in a pinch, we can simplify our lives by opting out of social engagements that apply too much pressure.

What else can you opt out of to simplify your life?

I find schools and churches are always asking for volunteers. I was always saying yes to all the requests, then I started saying "I'll think about it" and actually wondering if I had to time to commit to doing the job well. Then when I do volunteer I know I've made the correct decision and know I have the time to commit to doing the job well.

That is a great response!

I always say, "I'll check my calendar." That gives me time to go home and think about it. You're right it is easy to over commit.
