I've just posted an article about the basics of search engine function. Not an in-depth look of course, that would be more like an ebook laugh

Knowing a bit about how search engines produce those imposing pages of search results can help a lot with improving SEO on your own site. I'm planning an article in a few weeks that will go more into SEO for webmasters / web content producers.

The term "search engine" is often used generically to describe both crawler-based search engines and human-powered directories. These two types of search engines gather their listings in radically different ways. 1.Crawler-Based Search Engines 2.Human-Powered Directories

Search engines work by crawling hundreds of billions of pages using their own web crawlers. These web crawlers are commonly referred to as search engine bots or spiders. A search engine navigates the web by downloading web pages and following links on these pages to discover new pages that have been made available.
