According to this article from BBC News UK people who are overweight and obese don't want to lose weight and are oblivious to their health.

Obese 'don't want to lose weight'.

I'm curious, here's a poll...

I did not realize cancer was linked to obesity. Of course every other health problem under the sun is, so I shouldn't be surprised.

As far as wanting to lose weight, I'm willing to go through surgery to lose weight because I'm so tired (quite literally) of carrying all this extra poundage around. I'm still just waiting on my insurance company to give the go ahead.

As far as exercise goes, I'm in physical therapy, I have no choice! LOL But I'm glad I'm doing it this way, because I'll be able to continue under my PT after my surgery and won't have to worry about injuring myself. Then once I've lost some I'm really looking forward to being able to exercise again. (Sounds weird, doesn't it?)

I had a baby in 2004 and I went from weighing 150 to 180 when i gave birth and now im at 210. The inches seem to be going away but I just cant seem to lose the weight. It has become stressfull for me and even tho I am told how good looking I am in my mind I am very torn apart inside and looking at myself makes me feel worse. I think its difficult for me cause I woulod love to go to a gym and get a trainer or sumthing but it costs so much. I dont really knwo what else to do aboput it.

As for people that are like 300lbs or more...why would you let yourself get that far, obviously you had to of noticed a long time ago and should of got help then. As far as I am concerned people when they hit a point i think just get lazy and blame genetics. My family is big on one side but it doesnt mean I am gonna be. Get someone to help you and if you dont I think its your fault for not trying to make it better

Wow, that's pretty judgemental. I guess the same could be said to you. You had to of noticed a long time ago and should of got help then. I guess you're the only one who's under stress so it makes it all right.

Thanks Moe!

The more you gain weight, the harder it is to lose. The more it hurts to exercise. I weigh 267 at 5'8", so I guess I fall into that lazy category. The reason I am seeing a physical therapist is because my stomach muscles separated in the middle with my last baby (he's 3 now), but i didn't know it until my hysterectomy this past Sept.

All I knew was I had excrutiating pain in my lower back, hips, and knees whenever I tried to move and do exercising - especially things like crunches or anything abdominal. But I had so many other health problems going on, that I had to pick and choose what I could afford to see the Dr. about.

People that are heavier often have no cartilage left in their knees and/or hips and need joint replacements; but no surgeons want to do these surgeries until weight is lost because they see it as a waste of time. Yet to exercise without the cushioning of cartilage is like torture, so people become even more sedentary. Sedentary leads to lower metabolism - so even if people are eating the same (or less) they still gain weight.

And then there are also eating disorders. No-one makes fun of anorexia or bulemia, yet binging and "stuffing" for emotional reasons are just as real as the other two. But who has sympathy for a fat person? And of course as a person gets bed-bound, they get more depressed, and they eat more- vicious cycle. And although the mental condition of being addicted to food is exactly the same as the mental addiction to drugs or alcohol (and even some of the physical addictions, especially carbs and chocolate in particular); one cannot totally give up food as is expected of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Instead we are expected to "moderate". That's pretty tough, too.

So, for anyone who thinks the morbidly obese are funny or deserve it, try compassion or just thinking about what it might be like in their place. The physical pain, the embarrassment, the loneliness, the rejection. Heck, even Tyra Banks changed her mind after spending 1 day in a "fat suit" for her show!

Sorry for ranting Moe. <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
