I joined Twitter only about a week or two ago. (I've known about it for a while, but never thought it would useful to me, so I resisted joining until now.) Here are some questions I've got for those of you who use it regularly:

-How many tweets a day qualifies as too many? What's overkill?

-Is there an etiquette to 'following' people? For instance, lets say someone follows me, then I check out their recent tweets and I'm just not very interested in following them back. Is it offensive if I don't?

Hi Nancy. great question! There is so much to say on this topic and I have a series of articles planned to handle just this.

To start, here is a treatise on what kinds of types twitterers (or TWEEPS) fall into:

Also, just to answer your questions quickly, before getting into the detail i can in an article,

1. be careful how much you tweet at once. If you get annoying, and fill up people's screens, there's a good chance they will unfollow. However, how interesting your tweets are can go a long way here.

2. DO NOT follow people back who don't interest you. I personally feel it's best to be a "Friend" on twitter, rather than a "Collector"...see my article in the link above for details on that. One should really only follow those they find interesting and wish to actually get to know better on the Twitterverse.

On my personal Twitter account I follow those people who I like.

On my African Proverbs twitter account, I follow people who are following me if they seem like regular people - not some some weird promotion, someone just squatting, or a spammer type.

Thanks Nancy! Each social network platform has its own culture. One good tip - I try to lie low at first while i figure them each out. :-)

Here is another article about Twitter Culture and etiquette I made for you guys:

Jeanne, that is a really good point. if one has multiple twitter accounts, each one will need to create its own guidelines. I can see that a personal account would want to amass a different group than a business account, a news account, or an entertainment-type one.

As with most things, it's about your primary goal at each social media site. smile

And this one is about getting followers on your own - what to do, what not to do:
