Patrick Moore was one of the world's most famous amateur astronomers, known to generations of Britons for The Sky at Night, which he presented on the BBC for over half a century. Many professional and keen amateur astronomers ascribe their first interest in astronomy to these broadcasts. Others worldwide cite one of Moore's dozens of books as their inspiration.

A statement from a group of friends and staff read:
"After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy."

Sir Patrick Alfred Caldwell-Moore, CBE, FRS, FRAS (4 March 1923 9 December 2012).

To be expected but somehow one thought of him always being there.

I know what you mean, Peter. He felt like a constant presence, a bit like some of the celestial bodies that fascinated him.
