If you had US$5,000, where would you go in Southeast Asia and why?
In a second!! Why?? Why not?? It's somewhere I've never been, the culture and history are completely different. Plus I love traveling...the food, people, language, historic sites, climates, music, etc...

Now I want to go so bad!!
I would go to Hong Kong and go up Victoria Peak after dark to see the city lights shining below my feet. A ride on the Star Ferry is so cool. :music: queen

Took my wife on a business trip some time back. I thought she would like to visit a different part of the world. She is from Northern New Hampshire.

We went to Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

On our flight out there we ran into heavy head winds. This ate up the aircrafts fuel. So, a unscheduled refueling stop was made in Taipei.

The door was opened and we were asked if we wanted to stretch and have a cigarette. We walked down the stairs to the tarmac. surrounding the DC-10 and standing shoulder to shoulder were troops with machine guns facing outwards. They formed a complete circle around the aircraft and it was strongly urged upon us not to cross the line of the circle.

This astonished my wife and so began our sojourn.
Wow! What an experience. I hope the trip resumed peacefuuly.

I would get a cheap flight to Banda Aceh using my own money and help with the tsunami relief effort with the $5,000.
$5000..... I suppose that must be sufficient to go to Japan... though I'm not sure if that's classed as South East Asia

and why?

because Japan is cool! and I would go to Kyoto! Even though my Japanese is really bad and I probably wouldn't survive long... still, it would be fun.

Or got here during their snow festival! Oo so many big scultures of ice

The trip did resume peacefully. Our next stop was Hong Kong but this was on our way to Singapore. We love the Island Nation of Singapore. It is very beautiful and the people are warm and friendly. We stayed a week in Singapore and then flew on to Malasia (Kuala Lumpur).

Going thru customs was a bit of an eye opener for my wife as this was the 1st Muslim country she has ever been to.
Once we settled into our hotel she was treated with the most respect and courtesy and had a geat time.We stayed a week there and then flew on to Hong Kong for our return flight to the US.

In Hong Kong (5 days) we took in more sights then anywhere else. Unfortunately we did not get to Macau.

Someday we will return and re-visit our trip as it was wonderful.
Just John,

What did you see in Japan? What was your favorite?

Readers don't be shy. Share your dream destination. I just heard of Surin Beach in Thailand. It was not damaged by the tsunami. The film showed a sunny place complete with swaying palms. What a destination to take a break! Southeast Asia Editor
I have been to every country in Asia, Southeast Asia as well as India. My favourite spot for a holiday is Thailand! It is a diverse country that is the same distance from top to bottom as Seattle to San Diego.

There are mountains, plains, and of course the seaside. Each area has a different cuisine as well. Issan, the plains area of Northeast Thailand has fabulous snack or as they are called drink-foods. The south of Thailand cuisine includes a lot of seafood and quite spicy curries, some with a hint of Indian influence.

No matter where you decide to travel in Thailand you will encounter a wonderful culture, gorgeous scenery, and wonderful food.
Mary Anne what was your favorite place in Thailand and why?
Do you or anyone else have suggestions for the reader who is planning a Thai trip this November? Be kind give her some suggestions and why the place is great!

I'll visit Hong Kong and enjoy the magical place called Disneyland!!! yeheey!

I'd like to go to Thailand because I want to see Asian elephants. I've read somewhere that you can ride them there for a fee.
I'd love to go to Thailand and also to see Angkor Wat in Cambodia. I never thought about Cambodia until I saw the show "1000 places to see before you die" on the Travel Channel. That show is great. I wish they had traveled to more places in the book.

Thailand! One laid-back week at the beach and 1 week in the city for all the food and shopping, and sight seeing too!
Probably Cambodia. My husband is from there, but he left when he was a toddler, so I think he'd like to go back and see it.

But if I ignore what *he* would want to do smile , I would say either Singapore and the Philippines. They both just seem like really interesting places.

Vietnam can be a great choice too smile Because accommodation and food are cheap, landscape is wild and people are smiling, hospitable.
