What is everyone's favorite restaurant in Hawaii? Any good food memories you'd like to share?

It's been so long that I don't even remember the names of our favorite saimin stands. But I remember how we used to stop in for a bowl of won ton min and teriyaki beef sticks or oxtail stew. So onolicious.

When I go back, I want to try one of Sam Choy's restaurants or Roy's. There is a Roy's here in Newport Beach but I've never gone. My mom doesn't like the new fusion type dishes.

What is your favorite restaurant? Any good recommendations for when I go back?

Recommendations.... there are so many! I love Roy's. Everything I've ever ordered there was delicious. My favorite place for Thai is Bangkok Chef on Nuuanu. It's in an old carport and byob. Very tasty. Chinatown also has some good new restaurants. Indigos is pricey, but the food and ambiance are worth it. Soul de Cuba on Bethel serves up yummy Cuban food, and Mei Sum Dim Sum on Nuuanu is an old favorite. For cheap, greasy, and super-local, Rainbow Drive Inn on Kapahulu is good. Hope that helps!

Last summer, we spent a couple of weeks on Maui in Kihei. After flying for so many hours (from NM) to get there, we were exhausted and starving, but we wanted something light since it was late. Cafe O'Lei in Kihei was our godsend: they had an amazing papaya / shrimp / leafy greens salad with a lovely fruity dressing that fed our bellies as well as our souls! During our stay, we also found Maui Taco to have the perfect taste of home.

In Kauai there is this AWESOME sushi restaurant called Sushi Blues! It was the perfect way to end a day of surfing and watching the sunset on Ke'e Beach! Kauai is heaven on earth!

I used to live on Oahu I loved Todai it's a huge Japanese buffet. There's a little hole in the wall plate lunch place named Kenekes that I love in Waimanalo. Another lunch place I loved near Kakaako is Karen's Kitchen (cheap food and big portions). The Olive Tree Cafe (Greek) behind Kahala Mall. Peppa's (Korean) where I used to live in Makiki. Man I miss the food so much. Oh and Zippy's I loved the chilli chicken mixed plate.

Mama's Fish House in Maui. It's the best and has AMAZING seafood, but you need a reservation to get in.
