Short of erecting 8 foot fence, any ideas on how I can stop deer munching on my apple trees at night??

Anyone out there?

I've heard hanging bars of soap from the branches works or cloves of garlic but before I buy up the supermarket - any other ideas?

Another idea is unwashed human hair hung in unwashed tights!
This sounds a bit gross but does it work and where do I get unwashed hair???

OK someone out there must have a problem with deer? I'm sure I'm not the only one! Perhaps you are all on hols and who could blame you

As animals I like deer, but then I like apple trees too. I just don't happen to like the trees after the deer have visited. There must be a way of deterring them ?

I had just heard to put out human hair...not unwashed hair. Try a beauty parlor...I bet they have tons of hair to give away. But you would have to put it out new hair frequently. Connie
Thanks Connie - I've been round the hairdresser's and they say washed hair doesn't smell so much - however I collected enough to use this week. someone else told me deer don't like the smell of peppermint and to spray the leaves with mint solution - I suspect they would think I was putting out After Eight mints for them!

LOL...after dinner mints. I did a search on the net and found this: "Strong scents such as small hotel soaps drilled and hung on your shrubs and trees or fabricsoftener strips and bags containing peeled garlic bulbs can be hung or spread around vulnerable areas. For a garlic defense with less muss and fuss use garlic oil dispensers that clip right where you need them . Spaced about five to six feet apart they form a very strong odor barrier that can last up to six months." You might try that. Connie
Oh, and it said that most deer can jump a 12 foot fence. So an 8 foot one wouldn't help at all...Connie
I have had as many as seven in my yard. There is something called deer away or deer off and I am told it works like a charm. It lasts for about a month and then you re-apply it. It must work as my neighbors have salvaged their yards and the deer come over to mine. They love day lillies, apple trees, azaleas, and hostas among other things.

My neighbor across the way has put a large-hole netting over her plants and that seems to work also. It is black and disappears into the scenery. She also put aluminum pie plates hanging from strings too. That is not nearly as attractive. Cord strung low in front of the plants works also as they brush up against it and it makes the deer nervous. They cannot see it. Just don't forget it is there and trip over it.
Thanks Angie the netting idea sounds good - I'll give it a try

shoot them...lol just kidding. Try urinating around the areas a few feet away. Deer cannot stand the smell of human urine or by salt blocks and put them in areas away from the trees. Or cut the branches down that they can reach or shoot them.
The other half of the deer population are living in my meadow, hunting my apples!

I wonder if you are having trouble with them rubbing their horns in the Spring? That problem has been easy for us to solve with a loop of fencing around the base of the tree.

As far as saving you apples, I don't have any help there. Good luck.
