I saw a blurb about this on yahoo, they were talking about the original 7 Wonders of the World:
1. The Pyrmids of Giza
2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
3. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
4. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
5. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
6. The Colossus of Rhodes
7. The Lighthouse of Alexandria

The question was, what would be considered the Wonders of the World today? What do y'all think?

I say the pyramids still stand as one.

Apparently they're considering listing a new set of man-made wonders of the world because many of the original seven are no longer in existence. There is a lot of hype about it here in Aus, because the Sydney Opera House has been nominated...

Love your new avatar by the way Michelle. It's very clever and appropriate ;-)

Thanks Elle! I started working on it before Christmas.

I think I would have been better off if I had just drawn the darn thing rather than trying to use Corel Draw to do graphics! LOL

but, Actually I was wanting to do a poll to see what people here would say should be on the new world wonders list? What do you think should be on there? (Other than your beloved opera house! )

Well, the other buildings (mmm, maybe I should say "edifices", since they're not all buildings) nominated with the Opera House are the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal, Stonehenge, the Pyramids, the Acropolis, the Great Wall of China, Cambodia's Angkor Wat, the Machu Picchu Temple in Peru, the Easter Island statues, and the Kremlin.

(I'm not sure if this is all of the shortlisted wonders - apparently there were 77 originally nominated (this time round - there's been an attempted selection of new wonders before this)). The Pyramids are the only wonder remaining from the original 7 listed in 200BC).

There's a bit more information here.

There is a lot of (friendly) rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne, and Melburnians have insisted that there are many monuments, buildings, etc in Melbourne that are far more appropriate than the Opera House. One structure popularly put forward is the Bolte Bridge.

For me Angkor Wat and the pyramids in Egypt are the most beautiful wonders of the world. The only things that can come close to these places were made many years ago and nothing from the last century can.
