Hello! We had a huge hail storm here in Missouri on Tuesday. My tax lady found several green balls in the hail. They are about the size of golf balls, but look like they are organic. They have black specks...kind of remind me of kiwis. She gave me one but I have not opened it up. She said she opened up one and there are tentacles inside of it! Has anyone heard of anything like this? She has lived in that same house for 30 years and has never seen anything like it!

Whoa, I've never heard of this one! Have you seen the one she opened?

Hi Deena,
I live in MO, also, and I've never seen anything like that either. I'd be fascinated to know what was in it, though!
I remember during one particularly wet spring, like this one, that we had bright orange fungus things that hung on our cedar trees and looked sort of like a koosh ball with all those tentacles. Maybe it's something like that?

How cool is that? Is there a way to post a picture? I've heard of gelatinuous matter found in hail, but nothing like this. I wonder if the tentacles are like the stuff you see in some squashes or like milk pods??

Eleise! yes, I just opened it because it is starting to deteriorate and that is exactly what the inside "tentacles" look like! I took some pictures of the outside and inside, but I don't know how to post a picture on here!

We left Missouri Tuesday morning, and I'm grateful we missed that and the other storms, as well as the ones in Tupelo and Montgomery we missed by a few hours.

I've heard of fish and frogs raining down. The only explanation I can suggest is that maybe one of the tornados picked this up and sent it high enough to become encapsulated in the hail stones. Where there any news reports about the green hail? It would be very interesting to see if anyone froze one and could send it to a biology lab for identification.
