I have a tendency to have a bowl of sage smoldering every once in a while, and though this happens with sacred fires as well, it doesn't matter where I am seated or where I put the smudge bowl, the smoke always ends up in my face.

Even just now I moved said bowl from one end of the table to the other side of me, and yet again it is in my face.

What do you guys make of this?

I say the same thing here. You are well protected. My Native American and my pagan beliefs compliment each other well. A smudgestick of sweet grass works well, too.

Cigarette smoke always does the same thing with me. frown

I have always been taught smoke was a cleanser, but THEY say secondhand cigarette smoke is deadly. I have lost 2 close family members recently to lung cancer. Natural tobacco is used in many ceremony, however processed cigarettes are changed, I believe.

I used white sage as a smudge and do my home about once a month, at least just to clear the bad vibes.

cigarette tobacco is processed with a multitude of chemicals and with just as many additives. Irregardless of whether it comes from a carton or a tin.

If I were to ever smoke it, the only kind I'd touch would be home grown.

where and how can you grow your own tabacco? I am a smoker and would love to smoke the real stuff!!! and I think if I had to grow it and roll it I would quit sooner rather then never!!!

thanks for the help

um... okay, Im not sure how Tabacco has to do with Sage... but mm-kay!

I have always believed that smoke is cleansing to the aura. I also believe that it natually goes to where is is most needed. If you always feel the need to have the smugdie smoldering near you, maybe there is something that you are not looking at in your life.

Tobacco makes smoke, sage makes smoke. I don't know if sage smoke follows me, but tobacco smoke does... I don't know if that means anything or what it might mean...

Cigarette smoke always does the same thing with me.

I was wondering were or how to buy or grow tabacco that was natrual with out the chemical altering of cigs.

sorry to get off topic!!!

Tobacco is offered to the Great Mystery before all pipe ceremonies in Native American and earth-based spirituality. It in many way comparable to smudging with sage and sweet grass. I agree the smoke is wise and goes where needed. I've been taught it is not only a cleanser, but also a protector.

Forgive this question but I thought that the Native Americans mixed Sage and Sweet Grass with Tabacoo in there Pipe Ceremonies? do they burn them one at a time or does it depend on the tribe and Ceremonies?

Posted By: nadaurz Re: For the smudgers out there. - 09/11/07 12:38 AM
No need to forgive-questions are welcome! First, all tribes have their own ways and creation stories, etc. All are similar, but all are different. Smudging is very different from pipe ceromonies. Smudging is done for cleansing, purifying, and healing. Most commonly used is sage, sweetgrass, juniper, lavandar, sacred tobacco, and many types of resin. It is believed the smoke releases the energy of whatever is used. On the other hand, pipe ceremonies are for peace or symbolizing unity between tribes, etc. It is the sharing and passing of the pipe that is important here. The Lakota people most often mix sacred tobacco with willowbark. Hope that helps clear things up a bit.

Back to smoking tobacco....I am not a smoker first and foremost...but the tobacco I have has been gifted to me by many Pow Wow friends....I also have seeds, but have never planted any, perhaps now that I live in hot sunny SC I can with out fear of frost. I will say that smoking natural tobacco, from what I have heard, is much harsher on your throat than commercial tobacco, basically because it has not been cut, or mixed, with anything else. It would be the equivalent of eating pureed tomatoes from a can your whole life and finally getting to eat a beautiful ripe tomato.

Also something we used a lot of in smudges or other ceremonies was cedar, be it shavings of the wood or bits of green, it smells heavenly, not sharp like a yule tree, but sweet.

Cool! I didnt realize that the pipe ceremonies were different from smudgings....

I did realize that the natural Tabacco was harsher on the throat but I have heard that it is better for you when mixed with other herbs and plants.... I do know that the commercial herb cigs. are twice as harmful because they still have chemicals and tar even if it does not have nicotine!

All tobacco is carcinogenic, regardless of how it is produced. And since smoke is, after all, finely dispersed particulates, any smoke, including incense, is bad for your lungs.

Of course, smudge isn't necessarily inhaled like a cigarette, Nechochwen. It is slowly burned and allowed to waft through the air, Yes, I understand the concept of 2nd hand smoke, however smudge is usually burned outside except for when weather, ceremonies, and personal preference prevail.
