A quick "YES" or "NO" poll on if you have ever seen a LIVE bellydancing performance.

Yes, a friend of mine used to belly dance at middle eastern restaurants near Boston. It was quite fun to watch her dance!

Watching LIVE is soooo much different that in tv or movies. It's so moving to see a really good dancer do their thing

That is *definitely* true. Bellydancing is like dancing-flirting. So if you watch a movie about flirting, it's one thing. But if you're actually NEAR someone and they are flirting with you, it is SO different

LOL exactly!!!! I think it's just with Live music...while recorded music is great, LIVE music adds another level that is so wonderful...

There are lots of great belly dance groups based in the Bay Area. We've got both Fat Chance Belly Dance and Ultra Gypsy out here. Either troupe is fantastic.

There are also several Renaissance Fairs held in this area, and there are several smaller troups that dance at those. Habbi Ru is one of the best.

I got lucky, most of the models that my fellow artists and I use are belly dancers. There is a really great troupe out here, and it's tons of fun! Whenever one of us has an open house, the models all get together and dance for it. I must say, one of the dancers was pregnant at one point... and that was quite a unique experience to see a pregnant woman belly dance lol.

Hi! Yes, I have seen belly-dancing once at A La Turk in Chicago (turkish restaurant). There were two girls who come out while you are eating and dance around the tables, and try to get people up to dance with you. The one girl was beautiful-truly middle eastern, did an awesome job. Then the other girl looked like this was her "day job" (mind you we were eating at 9 pm) before she went on to her night job-she was blond, fake and baked, fake tatas, you can figure out what I mean....... LOL It was fun though!

I feel you on the "SHIVERS* when I hear an awesome live band and an great dancer dancing to them, it is truly a wonderful experience. The thing with dancing to live is being able to be able to think on your feet. The perfectionist in me feels a bit intimidated by that aspect (lol) so I haven't performed to live music....but I aspire to! ;-) Would LOVE to dance live to The Brothers of the Baladi and or Hossam Ramzy & Phil Thornton!

Oh my!!! lol your description of the 2nd dancer kinda makes me cringe! Did she at least perform well? Or did it seem like she relied more on her looks/outer package? Was she a believable dancer?
We have several schools in Tulsa, and one of them usually participates in parades or other events. I haven't gotten a chance to go to a major show since I don't live in the city and don't subscribe to the paper. I've wanted to take classes for years but I have some severe problems with my back and am not capable of doing some of the moves - especially those sexy undulations
I can't speak enough about how much I love the dance & the music!!

I'll be traveling to CA next month for the big Rakassah festival (the troupe I am in is performing). This will be my first time there & I hear it is a bellydancing BLAST!

I've seen belly dancing several times and have watched several tapes of professional BD dancers. I've been soo taken by it that I have started doing this at home to lose weight and to condition myself for the moment. I feel sooo fulfilled after going thru the dance (workout). Has anyone tried it after seeing it? You'd love it.
Hi Larieann:

Are you using a particular tape/vide for your workout? And if so which one(s)?

What about classes?

Oh yes! Live dancing is the best! I used to live in Katy, TX area right outside of Houston and there's some good dancing there! I took lessons from Mari Urbaez at the DanMar Studio, but I also went to her performances-she's a fantastic dancer!

Yes. Once. Our local import store (Masala Imports) has their own dance studio, which I go to and take lessons, in the next building. Masala Imports host haflas every once in a while. I went to one of the haflas and had so much fun watching all of these beautiful ladies dance. There were so many different types of dancing...it was awesome.

Lucky you! I've been to their websites and have heard good things about both. I would love to see The Indigo.

Here in Oklahoma, the only place other than studios you are going to see them is that type of fair. Bellydance considered a novelty rather than an art. The Hippie Shack hopes to change that

Tulsa is full of performing arts centers, so I hope to see some live dancing other than my fellow students someday.

My first view of bellydancing was at a middle Eastern restaurent in San Francisco. Lots of ethnic men there, and they REALLY appreciated the dancing. I loved it when a scantily dressed dancer slowly and coyly lifted her hair to expose the back of her neck, and the men went wild! Which taught me that the erogenous areas of the body can vary according to the culture.
