Would you ever name a child after a character in a book?

Or, would you use a name you first discovered in a book as a baby name (i.e. not name a child after the character necessarily)?

If so, what character or name would you use?

(BTW, check out my most recent article, Baby Names from Literature.)
my grandmother named my aunt after a character in a cowboy romance novel--Patricia (it was unusual for the 1930's)and recently a friend had a baby boy and named him Ka'Lel after Superman. It is awkward I think.

Nicolas Cage did the same thing! His son (born in 2005) was named Kal-El, so there's a bit of a spelling difference, but they're essentially the same name. How interesting. I wonder how many other people have also chosen this name recently.
Actually, my hubby and I thought of naming one of our kids "Eomer" from Lord of the Rings. smile
Jeannie - I have to admit, I've always had a thing for Eowyn. smile I don't think I would ever use it for a child, but I love the character, so I have these positive associations with the name. (And this pre-dates the recent movies. I read the trilogy and a few other Tolkien books a kid.)
I love it, piucking names from books, some of my favorite names actually come from books. I like the names Kieren from Tantalize, Emmett and Jacob and Alice from Twilight, Mattie from Northern Light, Johnny and Sodapop(its unquie) and Darry and Dally and Cherry/ Sharri, and Sandy from the Outsiders!!! Caleb and Kenny from Something Upstairs!
I would do it. I love the name Zoya, from Danielle Steel's book of the same title. I wonder if I can convince the daddy that it's a great name ;)
There are many character names that have stuck with me over the years. i have always loved Ayla (Clan of the Cave Bear), Coraline (Coraline), Charlotte (Charlotte's Web), Eloise (Eloise), and Violet (Boxcar Children).
i thought of another one, too, tho my S.O. hates it... "Kivrin" it's a girl name, from Doomsday Book.
I've always loved the name Josephine from Little Women and Cariad from The Garden of Stone.
I worked with a girl named Cindy. We all thought her name was Cynthia and no one ever questioned it.

One day the mail came with our paychecks and one was addressed to a "Cinderella"...

Surprise!! It was not the usual Cynthia like we thouhgt!
