Back when cancer was the whispered "C word" before Betty Ford and Happy Rockefeller spoke out about their breast cancer diagnoses, former child star Shirley Temple Black revealed that she'd had a mastectomy in 1972. Her action helped lift the disease's stigma.
Since then, the Pink Ribbon campaign has raised awareness and research dollars to find a cure, and women worldwide kbow to get screened.

I participate in the Breast Cancer 2 day walk. Its amazing. Before the Breast Cancer Foundation changed it to a 2 day walk they had a yearly one day event. It was a 5 kilometer walk or a 10 k run. The first walk that I went on with my friend I couldn't stop getting chocked up. If you had breast cancer or were a survivor you wear a pink shirt and everyone else had a white shirt. A lot of kids were wearing shirts with pictures of their mothers and their birth date and end of life date. It just broke my heart. they would say they are walking in memory of their mother. Kids like 5 years old and up. Today I have 5 friends that have breast cancer. Its shocking.
