would any1 be able to tell me how do you sex bengalese finches, because im thinking of getting a pair for my aviary, but im a bit worried if the petstore dont give me a pair so i just need to know wot im looking for.

You can't sex them by sight Michael. Stand back from the cage they are in at the pet store & watch them. If you see one sing, it will be a male. Choose that one & another one that you didn't see sing & you "might" have a male & female. You can never be sure though. Once you get them home & watch them for a couple of days, you may find that both of them are the same sex.

thanks mavis also i have zebra finch eggs in the aviary at the moment, will it be ok to put society finches in there while the eggs are in there?? please reply,thanks michael

Most of the time, there wouldn't be any problem introducing new birds, but when there are eggs, you're always taking a chance by adding new birds of any kind. They may be fine - but there may be problems which might include broken or deserted eggs.

thanks mavis, earm i have interduced 2 society finches and 1 of my zebras has not been in her nest since i interduced them approx 3hours ago has she abandoned her eggs or is she just startled by the new arrivles? if she has abandoned her eggs will she breed again? is there still a chane she will starty sitting on her eggs again?

Well, by now you probably know whether she will go back or not, but my guess is no. Once things settle down, she may breed again & go back to nest, but try not to add more birds when nesting is going on.

should i take her eggs out of the nest she has abandoned, also my 2 society finches, both of them do a sort of song but 1 chirps more than the other have i got 2 males or a pair. pleasde reply, thanks, michael

Yes,I would remove the eggs now, as its obvious that she won't be going back to them.

With the societies, only the male actually sings, but they will both chirp.

Ya know - when we *created* this domestic mixed finch, by whatever breeding means, why did we create one that is so difficult to sex? LOL!!!

I actually had a GOOD result out of a mistake! I ended up accidently with two female societies (Michael - they all chirp kinda like crickets - singing is distinctly different)... two girls has been GREAT in my situation. They paired up and both lay infertile eggs, settle in the nest and stay peaceful and happy. I don't end up with homeless society chicks. I have been told by a number of exotic finch breeders tell me that few society finch pairs will successfully raise the smaller African finches if they have already raised their own chicks b/c the begging behavior is far different. I have not tried to keep them WITH my cordons as they really need privacy to feel secure enough to nest.
